What an amazing journey it has been! A celebration marking the hundredth anniversary of the dedication of the imposing stone structure overlooking the southern end of Diamond Park in the city of Meadville, Pennsylvania, kicked off on Sunday, March 31, 1968. Marking the occasion, a volume detailing the early years of the Methodist Church in Meadville was produced, putting access to the history of the congregation in easily accessible form. The current volume has been designed to apply that tradition of one-stop accessibility to the subsequent half century. To bring that dream to fruition, a devoted group has devoted countless hours to researching and compiling the years 1968 to 2021. Continuing to build on the kind of firm foundation that grows from an awareness of where Stone United Methodist Church has been, its move into the always unknown future is underway. Greetings, reader! Thank you for joining us in a look back at the past fifty-plus years of the ministry of Stone United Methodist Church. Daniel A. Rudd, born a slave in Bardstown, Kentucky, grew up to achieve much in the years following the Civil War. His Catholic faith, passion for activism, and talent for writing led him to increasingly influential positions in many places. One of his important early accomplishments was the publication of the American Catholic Tribune, which Rudd referred to as "the only Catholic journal owned and published by colored men." At its zenith, the Tribune, run out of Detroit and Cincinnati, where Rudd lived, had ten thousand subscribers, making it one of the most successful black newspapers in the country. Rudd was also active in the leadership of the Afro-American Press Association, and he was a founding member of the Catholic Press Association. By 1889, Rudd was one of the nation's best-known black Catholics. His work was endorsed by a number of high-ranking church officials in Europe as well as in the United States, and he was one of the founders of the Lay Catholic Congress movement. Later, his travels took him to Bolivar County, Mississippi, and eventually on to Forrest City, Arkansas, where he worked for the well-known black farmer and businessperson, Scott Bond, and eventually co-wrote Bond's biography.

In 1926, the city of Philadelphia hosted the Sesqui-Centennial International Exposition to honor the 150th anniversary of American independence. The exposition featured four major exhibition palaces where innovations and advancements in science, technology, education, industry, and agriculture were displayed. An additional fifth palace was dedicated to the fine arts, and foreign nations and individual states erected their own buildings as well. The expositions theme of patriotism was showcased through the re?created High Street of 1776, a favorite for many. Visitors were also entertained and delighted as they experienced areas known as Treasure Island and the Gladway, where all manner of amusements abounded. Crowds were drawn to the many sporting and cultural events held in the newly built stadium. Even the grounds of the navy yard were opened to the public, allowing citizens views of historic and modern naval vessels and military exhibits. By these offerings, and many others, the Sesqui-Centennial International Exposition celebrated the nations past, present, and future.
