Excerpt from Service Bulletin, 1939, Vol. 23 Beatty resigned from the Forest Service shortly after the original machine was finished in 1930. Not long afterward he was drowned while fishing in Puget Sound. The work of radio development has continued under the direction of A. G. Simson, in charge of the Forest Service radio laboratory at Portland. Since 1932 each successive year has been paced by additional discoveries and improve ments, corresponding disappointments and difficulties. And out of all this have grown the widely used sets of today. Though the newspapers and we ourselves may be prone to treat them with no more than an off-hand respect these sets are, even in a purely mechanical light, one of the out standing wonders of the radio world. Improvement must still go on, but when viewed in a utili tarian way their worth not only to the cause of conservation but to society as well al ready can hardly be evaluated either in dollars and cents or in words. Excerpt from Bulletin of the School of Medicine, University of Maryland, Vol. 18: 1933-1934 The Operations performed at that time were not sufficiently extensive and they therefore failed to accomplish the desired result. The same criticism may even now be offered, because there are still many surgeons who do not resect sufficient lengths of ribs and, therefore, fail to collapse existing cavities. If necessary, one should do repeated operations in order to accomplish this result, for the patient is never out of danger as long as an open cavity exists. We must help the student in the learning Of a group Of facts and principles, help him acquire an extensive vocabulary Of mathematical ideas. B. To help the student understand thoroughly all funda mental principles. The mere knowledge alone Of principles is Obviously Of no value whatsoever unless accompanied by a thorough understanding. C. To develop the student's ability to use mathematics as a tool - to apply it. The student Should not merely be a mechanical manipulator or imitator. He should develop his ability to apply the principles Of mathematics to new Situations. It is well to note here that a student may have a thorough knowledge and understanding Of principles, and yet be entirely incapable Of using them in the applications. Excerpt from Service Bulletin, 1941, Vol. 25 Thirty-five years have come and gone since I reported as ranger to Dr. Porter's office in Montrose. I had never met him, and in the bustle and hurry of that first stretch he was absent when I arrived but left instructions for me to proceed to Naturita and take grazing applications. Followed two months alone among mostly hostile stockmen with only the written word of my supervisor and the little Use Book to guide me. Then Dr. Porter, the man, appeared With pack outfit for a trip around the Forest on which Barney Duffy and myself were to accom pany him. It was a case of love at first Sight And for thirty-five years the high regard has never dimmed. For the past few years I have visited at the Porter home at Lake Hodges every year or two for a few days, and the old fires have burned With a Singular brightness as we recounted bygone days when the Service and we were young together.
