Excerpt from Sermons, Vol. 1 His sermons were habitually written, and with great care. Their length makes them a curiosity, when viewed by the standard Of modern preaching; and their voluminous divisions and sub divisions give an exhibition of the intelligence and Scriptural instruction of his days exceedingly honorable to the people of his nation and time. Any one of these discourses would be ample for three or four that would be esteemed adequate and enough for a modern assembly. Excerpt from Sermons, Vol. 1 of 2 The Sermon on Jer. Viii. 20, entitled, The Bar vest Past, was probably the most useful, and by many perhaps will be regarded as the most eloquent of his Discourses. At least four extensive revivals of religion were supposed to commence in consequence of its delivery. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Sermons, Vol. 1 of 3 The author cannot fail to recollect with gratitude, the unexpectedly rapid sale of a former volume, and the many favourable acknowledgments he has received from its readers. though repeatedly urged to issue a new edition of that volume, or other fruits of his pen, he has hitherto declined, except occasionally to publish sermons and essays in some, of, the current periodicals. But since his health has failed, and he can no longer stand in the holy place, rather than bear the agony of living to no purpose, he has summoned resolution, with the encourage ment and aid of kind friends, to arrange and issue these three volumes, including some. Excerpt from Ninety-Six Sermons, Vol. 1 A few words only will suffice to put the reader in possession of all that it is important for him to know with respect to the present volume. The text has been carefully reprinted from the second edition published in 1631, and it has throughout been collated with the editions of 1641 and 1661; but with the exception of a few verbal inaccuracies and obvious misprints, which have been corrected, it has not been deemed advisable, or indeed found necessary, to make the slightest alteration either in the style or in the arrangement of the author. Much labour has been bestowed upon the marginal references to Scripture, many of which were found on examination to be exceedingly erroneous, and it soon became apparent that unless they were revised throughout, the reader would experience no ordinary difficulty in discovering the passages to which he was directed. They have accordingly been submitted to a rigid scrutiny, and the result has been such, that the editor is led to hope but few inaccuracies have escaped his observation. Excerpt from Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament, Vol. 1 The Sermons of S. Augustine, besides their other excellencies, furnish a beautiful picture of perhaps the deepest and most powerful mind of the Western Church adapting itself to the little ones of Christ. In them, he who has furnished the mould for all the most thoughtful minds for fourteen hundred years, is seen forming with loving tenderness the babes in Christ. Very touching is the child-like simplicity, with which he gradually leads them through what to them were difficulties, watching all the while whether he made himself clear to them, keeping up their attention, pleased at their understanding, dreading their approbation, and leading them off from himself to some practical result. Very touching the tenderness with which he at times reproves, the allowance which he makes for human infirmities and for those in secular life, if they will not make their infirmities their boast, or in allowed duties and indulgences forget God. But his very simplicity precludes the necessity of any preface. His Sermons explain themselves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The World's Great Sermons, Vol. 1 of 10 The aim in preparing this work has been to bring together the best examples of the products of the pulpit through the Christian centuries, and to present these masterpieces in attractive and convenient form. It is believed that they will be found valuable as instruction to ministers of to-day. They should also be helpful to others who, tho not preachers, yet seek reading of this kind for the upbuilding of personal character and for strengthening their Christian faith. The sermons have been chosen in some cases for their literary and rhetorical excellences, but in every case for their helpfulness in solving some of the problems of Christian living.
