Costs of skidding with 25- to 80-drawbar hp. crawler tractors in southwestern Montana are analyzed and compared. Data include operating times, terrain classes, steepness of slopes, efficiency of operators, costs of owning and operating, and log production. Charts enable a user to quickly estimate skidding cost per MBF considering distance from log deck to log-making area, type of terrain, average slope, and efficiency of operator.

A series of tables shows costs of skidding as determined by various types of equipment, distances for skidding, percent of slope, logs per MBF, and MBF per acre. By consulting these tables a contractor can compare methods of skidding according to their relative operating costs and thus estimates must be regarded as tentative and subject to revision.
