Excerpt from Sea-Fishing on the English Coast Part I. Most of all needs apology to existing writers on the subject: that apology must lie in the impossibility of omitting it, although containing but little that has not already been written. Part II. Is, I believe, on an original plan, as most writers deal very sparingly with the subject of Season. Part III., though little more than a compilation of personal experiences and letters, is undoubtedly the most useful in the book. I can only regret the sadly deficient results of my work in this direction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Sea-Fishing on the English Coast A "Kind Friend" suggested to me that I should call my book "A Preface," "for," said he, "prefaces are never read"! But the preface is to the writer a most important part of his book, being his only opportunity of explaining himself to his readers, and attempting to avert some of that adverse criticism which rains down upon most first attempts as plentifully as manna, and with about the same soothing and nourishing effect. Part I. most of all needs apology to existing writers on the subject: that apology must lie in the impossibility of omitting it, although containing but little that has not already been written. Part II. is, I believe, on an original plan, as most writers deal very sparingly with the subject of "Season." Part III., though little more than a compilation of personal experiences and letters, is undoubtedly the most useful in the book. I can only regret the sadly deficient results of my work in this direction. "Qui s'excuses accuse is a time-honoured saying, which shall not, however, deter me from giving a word of explanation with regard to the strange resemblance existing between parts of my book and "M.M.'s" "Sea-Fishing Notes" in the Fishing Gazette. Excerpt from Sea-Fishing as a Sport: Being an Account of the Various Kinds of Sea Fish, How, When, and Where to Catch Them in Their Various Seasons and Localities IN the following little volume I have endea voured to lay before the public a plain and practical work on Sea Fishing, a book which has been long wanted, there never having been one published which treated solely on this subject. In it I have given a brief account of the British fisheries, and a descriptive statement of each of the most important kinds of fish found on our coast, with a View to induce those who migrate every year from the interior of the country to the coast, to make Sea Fishing in all its branches a distinct pursuit quite as much as salmon fishing. Excerpt from Sea Fish and How to Catch Them It is my intention, in this little work, to deal principally with the modes of fishing usually practised on our own coast, and the description of tackle and baits which will be found most useful to those who visit the sea-side on health and pleasure-seeking expeditions. I shall also give a few hints and directions as to the best description of outfit for those going abroad. Many of the remarks which I shall have to make will apply' to the mouths of large tidal rivers, as many sea-fish at times visit such localities. Trusting that my readers may spend as many agreeable hours in search of old ocean treasures as I have. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Sea Coast Fishing: With Special Reference to Calm Water Fishing in Inlets and Estuaries Mr. Richards has asked me to write for him a hand book of the latest practical methods of sea-angling for sport, and without any of the usual prefatory apology, praise of this particular branch of fishing, description of the scenery, the birds, the fisherfolk, such as come in so handy to make a book pan out over a given number of pages. This course I am quite content to take, as it relieves me of the necessity of drawing on a literary style of doubtful quality, and enables me to plunge forthwith into the purely practical aspect of my subject. Presum ably, however, a word may be permitted as to the title chosen for the book. Sea and Coast Fishing! Some will object: why two names'for one pastime? And not even the sub-title will explain the difficulty. Well, the meaning was simply this. So many people are deterred from joining the ranks of amateur sea-fishers by the indifferent sport obtainable, at any rate in the summer holiday season', from most of our piers, and the indifferent pleasure afforded by tossing in a small boat on an unruly sea, that it is my aim in a portion of this book to indicate to them methods and localities that offer sport with most of our sea-fish - of those, at any rate, like the bass. Excerpt from Deep-Sea Fishing and Fishing Boats: An Account of the Practical Working of the Various Fisheries Around the British Islands; With Illustrations and Descriptions of the Boats, Nets, and Other Gear in Use Most of the materials for the following Account of the Deep Sea and general Coast Fisheries of the British Islands were collected by me whilst Secretary to the Royal Sea Fisheries Commission, whose Report was laid before Parliament early in 1866. My duties in that capacity obliged me in most cases twice to visit almost every fishing station of any importance in the United Kingdom, thus enabling me to make a personal examination of the various boats and appliances used in the fisheries at each place, and sometimes to take part. With the fishermen in their work. Towards the end of 1865 the necessity for an official inquiry into the work ing of the pearl fisheries on the coast of Ceylon led to my being sent for a few years to that colony, and obliged me to postpone bringing these pages before the public; the delay, however, although a matter of some regret to me, has afforded me an opportunity of observ ing the changes which have since taken place, and of noting the progress or decline of particular fisheries since the removal of all restrictions on their working.
