DOWNLOAD EBOOKSherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson are visited by Mr Josiah Endicott, an injured enquiry agent who believes that three recent murders are connected. He explains that he was attacked shortly after interviewing a friend of one of the victims and warned to discontinue his investigation. A remark of one of his assailants appeared to confirm that the murders were committed with a common motive and, as his client is clearly unable to proceed, Holmes agrees to assume the case. The duo call upon Miss Daisy Scanlon, the young woman visited by Mr Endicott before he was injured, who was distressed but of some assistance. Returning to Baker Street, it is not long before a message from her arrives requesting a further meeting. Holmes realises at once that the appointment is a trap, but they set out to see what can be learned after ensuring that they are armed. They narrowly escape with their lives, immediately revisiting Miss Scanlon to discover that she has suffered a fatal accident in her home. Although it is not apparent, Holmes deduces that she has been murdered. Consulting the extensive notes left by his client, Holmes then conducts a series of interviews. These lead him to believe that the murders are linked to The Experience Club, an establishment barred to all except gentlemen who have performed extraordinary feats. There he recognises agents of Imperial Germany, and eventually uncovers a plot to assassinate the Queen. It transpires that German agents have abducted a Member of Parliament, in order to gain information, and also his daughter as an incentive to gain his co-operation. Holmes knows, despite discouragement from Scotland Yard and his brother Mycroft, that these incidents also must be addressed, to prevent a blow to our country that would devastate the Empire.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKIn 1888 the dreaded figure of Jack the Ripper stalked London's East End murdering prostitutes. His crimes set in motion a huge police operation and have held a dark fascination over the public's imagination for over a century, yet his identity has never been proved. Now, for the first time, two leading Ripper experts have joined forces to treat the case like a police investigation. Drawing on their unparalleled knowledge of the Jack the Ripper murders and their professional experience as police officers, they uncover clues that have remained undetected for over a hundred years. There are five 'canonical' Ripper victims, yet Scotland Yard's 'Whitechapel Murders' files include another six suspected victims. Drawing the reader into the world of police investigation in Victorian London, Evans and Rumbelow reveal the conflict between the City and Metropolitan forces and the ridicule heaped on the police by the press. Investigating each murder, they conclude that only four of the eleven victims were actually killed by the Ripper. Perhaps most tellingly, they question the motives behind the destruction of evidence – particularly the message 'The Juwes are the men that will not be blamed for nothing', which was chalked on the wall near one murder site and rubbed out on order of the Chief Commissioner – and ask whether the enigmatic Dr Robert Anderson, officer in charge of the investigation, knew the Ripper's true identity. Jack the Ripper: Scotland Yard Investigates strips away much of the nonsense that has accumulated since 1888 and reopens files on a case that will perhaps never be fully solved but will always fascinate.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKFrom the serial murders of Jack the Ripper to the Great Train Robbery, the real-life crimes documented by Scotland Yard rival the thorniest cases of such resourceful fictional detectives as Sherlock Holmes, Jane Marple, and Hercule Poirot. Gathering together a dazzling array of true crime stories, this fascinating history of the world's most famous police department presents detailed portraits of the colorful characters who have left their mark on British law enforcement: magistrate Henry Fielding and his Bow Street Runners; Charles Rowan and Richard Mayne, the architects of England's new police force; and a rogues' gallery of notorious criminals--from Constance Kent, the 16-year-old child killer whose ingenious coverup almost fooled Victorian detectives, to a raft of modern-day terrorists including foreign extremists, IRA gunmen, and drug overlords. Elegantly written and filled with intriguing information, this book is a fitting tribute to those staunch upholders of British justice, the "sharp-eyed blokes'' of Scotland Yard. --Publisher description
