'My life is loving people. It's a difficult kind of world to live in, but it's a great world, because I get satisfaction and I don't have any hang-ups about it! I belong to the people. As long as I can send them home saying, 'Gee, he made me feel happy, ' well, that's my life! That's what I work for, to give people joy.' Ray Bolger The Wizard of Oz is one of the most beloved movies of all time, and the Scarecrow is one of its most revered characters. Behind the character was a man of great spirit who guided his niece, Christianna Rickard, down the Yellow Brick Road of life. The unforgettable Ray Bolger taught her lessons that gave her courage and direction when a twister nearly blew her life off course. Great challenges swirl around all of us today on the unpredictable journey through life. In Remembering Oz: My Journey with the Scarecrow, the author shares vivid memories of her uncle and creates a vision of wholeness to remind us of our most essential bond that of being human. Her uncle, the Scarecrow, dances again in this uplifting memoir about the classic American story that mysteriously unites us all.

The Wizard of Oz has captured the imagination of the public since publication of L. Frank Baum's first book of the series in 1900. Oz has shaped the way we read children's literature, view motion pictures and experience musicals. Oz has captured the scholarly imagination as well. The seventeen essays in this book address numerous questions of the boundaries between literature, film, and stage--and these have become essential to Oz scholarship. Together the essays explore the ways in which Oz tells us much about ourselves, our society, and our journeys.

This is the Oz book which L. Frank Baum considered his best. It starts quietly enough with Trot and Cap'n Bill rowing along a shore of the Pacific Ocean to visit one of the many caves near their home on the California coast. Suddenly, a mighty whirlpool engulfs them. The old sailorman and the little girl are miraculously saved and regain consciousness to find themselves in a sea cavern. (To this day, Trot asserts she felt mermaid arms about her during those terrible moments under water.) From here on, one perilous adventure crowds in upon another. In Jinxland they meet the Scarecrow who takes charge of things once Cap'n Bill is transformed into a tiny grasshopper with a wooden leg. An exciting royal reception greets the adventurers upon their return to the Emerald City.

This new companion book, Opening Doors to Quality Writing, for ages 6 to 9, puts the focus on pupils producing quality writing - developing their literacy skills and a love of reading in the process. In the course of his educational consultancy work, Bob has seen many teachers successfully use the scope and depth which literature can offer to inspire high standards, mastery learning and, above all, a love of language in its many forms. Schools using the 'opening doors' strategies told Bob they led to: More teacher empowerment and confidence. More knowledge building for pupils and teachers. A growing confidence with literature, including poetry. Planning from the top becoming a norm. Planning for mastery learning becoming a norm. Improved comprehension skills. Improved quality writing and associated excitement. They also asked Bob for further examples of inspiring, quality texts, and more ways in which pupils of all abilities can access them. Bob was only too happy to oblige. These 15 units of work cover poetry and prose: each unit provides exciting stimulus material, creative ideas for writing projects, and differentiation and support strategies, meaning all pupils can achieve the quality writing objectives. All the units should help teachers facilitate understanding of the challenging texts and maximise the huge potential for quality writing. Discover a multitude of ready-to-use ideas, inspired by classic literature and great writers' works, along with plenty of new strategies and advice.
