DOWNLOAD EBOOKDuring the last decade distributed computing has all but replaced the centralized model of computing. This shift has brought computing power closer to the individual giving them more resources, flexibility, and control. It has also brought them an environment which is less reliable, more difficult to understand, and more challenging for application builders. This dissertation explores an increasingly popular method of communication known as the publish/subscribe paradigm. While this paradigm supports a wide variety of implementation possibilities, it offers a clean and simple abstraction for interprocess communication upon which applications builders can construct reliable distributed programs. An architecture is presented which uses the natural asynchrony of this paradigm to provide a reliable, fault-tolerant, and scalable communications platform. The focus is on providing support for lossless data communication to large numbers of machines while providing efficient use of network resources even in the face of server and client failures.
