The Handley Page Victor was the longest serving V-Bomber with the RAF. It was conceived in 1945 and after much research and development the Mk 1 entered service in the late 1950s to become part of the UK's nuclear deterrent force. It could fly faster, higher and further than any comparable aircraft of that era. It boasted a unique crescent wing shape and was the most handsome of the three types of V bomber. It was later extensively modified to become the RAF's main tanker aircraft for in-flight refuelling and served in that role from 1965 until 1993. This is the most authoritative reference to the aircraft yet to be published. Commencing with the first design trials and test flights, each chapter includes personnel recollections from pilots and design staff, and is solidly based on official government and company reports, many of which are included. The text explains the introduction and operation once it was in RAF service and explains the various roles that it undertook and the many experiments and trials that took place to perfect the various systems required for these roles. The Mk 2 was a much improved model and many were adapted for tanker duties. All is fully explained with copious diagrams and rarely seen photographs. Lengthy appendices detail Aircraft Accident Reports and other unique information that has never been published. This is the ultimate reference book on this famous and much-loved aircraft.7 Colour Profiles by David Windle, 22 Colour Photographs, 170 Mono Photographs and 66 Diagrams
Katerina looked out of the window, as if she felt that they were waiting for her: she saw Grisha’s classmate. He was handsome and looked like an agent from a movie. Cloak. Belt. Usually, young people rarely use belts. Now Grisha stood and dutifully waited for Katerina.
The first book of a thrilling new fantasy epic rooted in Indian mythology, RED SAPPHIRE brings together a complex counterpoint of suspenseful arcs, vivid imagery, and tender human stories. An unabashedly global tale told across present-day San Francisco and WWII India, RED SAPPHIRE is the debut novel of Stanford-educated author, Ashley Mayers.
The first collection focused on the writing of provocative author and performance artist Sapphire, including her groundbreaking novel PUSH that has since become the Academy-award-winning film Precious.
Sapphire, as the Preface explains, is a tale or saga of perhaps the most dangerous period of the Cold War. This was a time when the two superpower antagonists seeking the mastery of the world were challenging each other in important peripheral areas around the world, risking dangerous escalation to major war. At the same time they were creating enormous arsenals of total destruction on hair trigger alert in a situation where neither side had a good idea what the other was doing, therefore having to always worst case everything. It is extraordinary that the fatal mistake was not made somewhere along the lineand it nearly was during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 at the end of this periodprecipitating worldwide nuclear war. Into this maelstrom entered a young woman tasked by her employer, the Central Intelligence Agency, to try to find a way to provide more openness between the sides and reduce worst-case planning as well as to try to help prevent regional confrontations from damaging US interests and spinning into world crisis. Sapphire is the story of that young woman, primarily during the years 1954 to 1961.
Sapphire wonders if she’ll ever get her magical power in the second book of this sparkly new chapter book series that follows the trials and triumphs of young foals attending Unicorn University—perfect for those who love magic, happiness, and My Little Pony! It’s another day at Unicorn University when Shamrock’s magic power develops. While his new ability is super cool, Sapphire doesn’t know how to feel. Now she’s the only one of their friends without any magic. Sapphire knows that when a unicorn’s power appears is as special as the unicorn herself…but what if she’s the only unicorn who never gets one? Then Sapphire realizes something: maybe she’s already unlocked her magic, and she doesn’t know it yet! Maybe she just has to search for it. Will her power be one that her friends already have, like invisibility or flight? Or will it be something Sapphire never expected?
