Sometimes known as "Hinduism", or alternately as the Vedic tradition, the religion of Sanatana Dharma is the most ancient, continuously practiced spiritual tradition on earth. The term "Sanatana Dharma" is translated from the Sanskrit language to English as the "Eternal Natural Way". It is the religion of over one-billion of the world's current inhabitants. In this very accessible and easily readable new book, Sri Dharma Pravartaka Acharya, one of the world's greatest living authorities on the tradition of Sanatana Dharma, provides us with a brief, yet extremely authoritative, introduction to this remarkable spiritual path. Acharya explains the many contributions of Sanatana Dharma to the world, including being the original source of natural medicine, meditation, martial arts, philosophy, science, and sacred arts and culture. As Acharya demonstrates in this book, Sanatana Dharma is much more than just a religion. Sanatana Dharma is a divine civilization. Introduction to Sanatana Dharma explains the philosophical world-view and practices of this amazing spiritual tradition in an easy to follow and understand format, as well as reveals how Sanatana Dharma can help bring deep spiritual meaning and peace to our daily lives. If you are seeking philosophical answers to life's deepest mysteries, as well as a spiritual path that delivers joy, peace, contentment and purpose, Introduction to Sanatana Dharma is a must read for you.

Christian Missionaries worked hard to convert immigrants. Their first order of business was to denigrate Hinduism, designate Hindus as heathen, and disparage their culture, food and even attire. Immigrants stubbornly resisted, led by the tiny educated elite, including Brhmaas whom we call Brahmins. Conversion was a failure at least up to the end of the 19th century but picked up a self-generating momentum thereafter. The result is that the share of Hindus in Guyana’s Indian population declined from 83.5 percent in 1880 to 62.8 percent in 2012. The largest portion of the contraction was lost to Christianity. The loss notwithstanding, even a casual observer would conclude that Guyanese Hindus, at home and in the Diaspora, are a very religious people. Many of us do a jhandi or havan once annually; others do the more elaborate and costlier yajña, where everyone is welcome, once or twice in their lifetime. Most of us do a short daily puja – prayers, offerings, reading the stras and listening to bhajan – in our homes. An important, but perhaps unintended, way immigrants countered conversion to Christianity was an unplanned movement towards a “synthesis” that brought Hindus, regardless of caste or sect, under a “unitary form of Hinduism.” The “synthesis” began around the 1870s and was completed by the 1930s to the 1950s. Guyanese Hindus call the unified corpus of religious beliefs and practices that emerged from the “synthesis” Sanatana Dharma. Ramesh Gampat labels it Plantation Hinduism in this path-breaking book. The book argues that the brand of Hinduism practiced is inconsistent with Sanatana Dharma, called Vednta by the more philosophically inclined. Plantation Hinduism features an extraordinary dependence upon purohits (pandits), which has anaesthetized the Hindu mind and render him unable to think, question and inquire when it comes to Dharma. Rituals and bhakti have been degraded and turned into desire-motivated worship; devats have been misconstrued as Brahman rather than as limited manifestation of the one non-dual pure Consciousness; belief in the multiplicity of gods encourages image worship; and superstitions anchor Guyanese Hindus to tradition and mere belief. Plantation Hinduism is little more than desire-motivated actions, dogmas and superstitions. Absent is the idea that Sanatana Dharma is a spiritual science no less scientific than hard sciences, such as physics and astronomy. The central message of Vednta is the innate divinity of every person and the freedom to realize that divinity through anubhava, direct personal experience of Supreme Reality.

Hinduism for GenNext !On the 23rd of April 2004, I was flying from JFK Airport, New York City to SFO to attend a press meeting at Monterey, California. An American girl was sitting right beside me, near the window. After some time, she smiled and we introduced ourselves to each other. I told her that I am from India. Instantaneously, the girl enquired, "What's your faith?""What?" I asked as I didn't understand the question."I mean, what's your religion? Are you a Christian or a Muslim?" she elaborated her question."No!" I replied, "I am neither Christian nor Muslim."With a perplexed look, she questioned, "Then who are you...'""I am a Hindu", I said. She gazed at me as if seeing a caged animal. She could not understand what I was talking about....- These are opening sentences of my article "Am I a Hindu?" written long ago. Most of the readers would be familiar with this article as this happened to be most shared article on Hinduism for Westerners. Many readers, especially parents of non-resident Indians told me to write a book on the similar line. It took me many years of research and study to complete this book. The 'Why Am I a Hindu?' gives a fresh perspective, mostly with a twist in the tale in a breezy, conversational style that makes even weighty philosophical discussions easy to digest.Opinion of those who read the first few chapters' draft: "A must-read for those who wish to gain a deeper, clearer understanding of issues related to Sanatan Dharma." Ajit Menon. "I find your chapters very thought provoking and insightful. Both my wife and I consider ourselves seekers of truth and enlightenment and your writings evoke great wisdom within this arena. Now, I myself follow eastern spiritual philosophy." Al Sanchez. "This book is a simple gateway to understanding the uncomplicated ways of otherwise seemingly complex Sanatan Dharma through conversations between the author and his friends or readers. The author explains the science, logic and rational of Sanatan Dharma in a very simple, lucid and reader-friendly style. The hardcore Vedic philosophy is made ridiculously simple for the beginners." Anita Sharma. "It is non-fiction, but you can read it as if you are reading a compelling fiction novel. It is really a fun book to read. And you will understand the rational, logic and science of our culture and traditions." Sahana Madhyastha. "This would be the best gift you can present to the younger generation to understand the science of Sanatan Dharma to begin with following which it can be practiced in daily life to avoid stress and lead a peaceful happy life." Josh Matthew
