As well as such famous works as London and The Vanity of Human Wishes, both owing much to Juvenal, Samuel Johnson wrote many poems in Latin and several in Greek. He also translated a large batch of epigrams from the Greek Anthology into Latin to while away the sleepless nights of the last winter before he died. His subjects vary from religious themes and the quality of Pembroke College beer, to a motto for a goat that circumnavigated the globe, to his own ill-health. Some pieces are entertaining squibs; others disclose his complex emotions towards people and places.

This edition of Johnson's Latin Poems contains a Preface and Introduction followed by text, translation (prose), and brief notes on the poems. Several corrections have been made to the standard text. The notes deal with the obscurities and provide comment on style and treatment. It is often interesting to see how Johnson uses his Latin sources, especially Horace, to add a dimension to his meaning. There are numerous links with familiar episodes in Johnson's life, e.g., his trip to the Hebrides, the revision of his dictionary, his recovery from illness; and there are instances (notable in the anguished appeals for mercy in his prayers), where the more distant Latin form enables Johnson to say things about himself that he would never have expressed in English. The reader will find new details added to the well-loved portrait.

"This definitive edition, the first since 1974, presents all the poetry of Samuel Johnson (1709-1784), including his play, Irene, with detailed wide-ranging commentary. It has been expertly edited with attention to the extant manuscripts and all relevant printings. The volume includes the entirety of Johnson's verse in all its generic diversity: including satire, ode, elegy, verse drama, and verse prayer. The poems are presented in their original spelling and punctuation with extensive commentary on their literary background-biblical, classical, and modern-as well as careful explanation of unusual words, allusions to historical figures, and references to contemporary events that appear in the poems. Proceeding chronologically, this edition also situates Johnson's verse in the context of his life from his early days in Lichfield to his career as an author in London. Unlike all earlier editions, the present offering provides full translations of all the Latin and Greek poems on which Johnson based so much of his English verse. Correspondingly, it provides the English poems which some of his Latin verse translates. Neither in the presentation of the verse nor in the commentary does this edition assume a command of foreign languages: it aims to be useful for all students of Samuel Johnson's poetry"--

This work is based on a simple premise-that in the case of a major figure like Johnson the reader should have access to all his work. Johnson himself would not have wished that in an age when very few can read the language his Latin poetry should be consigned to a separate category, closed to most educated readers.
