For those who love sailing and you-are-there travel literature. Also for those who enjoy studying the life and times of the Apostle Paul. But definitely for those who love adventure, or at least reading about it! Seafaring isn't for the faint of heart. It wasn't for the Apostle Paul in the first century A.D.—shipwrecked, imprisoned, and often a stranger in foreign lands. And it turned out to be a heart-stopping task some two thousand years later, when a religion professor and his wife undertook a 14-month journey by sailboat! They stopped in eight countries, visiting every site where Paul stopped on his tumultuous missionary journeys. "Sailing Acts" traces this 21st-century voyage from Volos, Greece, to Rome, Italy, by car, by foot, by motorized scooter, but mostly on a 33-foot boat, logging more than 3600 nautical miles over two sailing seasons. "Explorers are easy to admire or despise, but very difficult to understand without going on the trip," writes Stutzman. "To really appreciate the experiences, the drama, and development of Paul the explorer, you need to sail with him." So begins Sailing Acts, inviting readers to come on board. Stutzman draws thoughtful comparisons from his own travel mishaps and adventures to the ones Paul experienced on his journeys. This book is in the tradition of Bruce Feiler's Walking the Bible. Stutzman's knowledge of the socio-political setting in the first-century Roman empire provides an informative backdrop to understanding Paul and reading his epistles in a new light. The book includes dozens of photos, maps showing the couple's travel routes, a list of all the repairs and replacements Stutzman made to the aging boat which he bought sight-unseen, and an itinerary of places they visited. At my birth in Norfolk, Virginia September 24, 1938 my mother June prayed I would become a teacher or minister. Now at 72 years of age - after 45 years as a pastor, teacher and missionary - I can thank her for her prayers for they were fulfi lled beyond her most hopeful dreams. I look back on 60 years of Biblical studies beginning when I fi rst completed reading the King James Bible at the age of 12. I have been in love with the Scriptures – and reading/writing in general – and always wanted to publish a new edition of the New Testament.

Anabaptists and Mennonites have often been the subject of media scrutiny: sometimes admired, at other times maligned. Luther called them schwarmar, a German word meaning "fanatics" that alludes to a swarm of bees. In contrast, American independent film producer John Sayles drew inspiration from Mennonite conscientious objectors for his 1987 award-winning film, Matewan. Voltaire's Candide features a virtuous Anabaptist. Oscar Wilde's play The Importance of Being Earnest contains an Anabaptist reference. An Anabaptist chaplain is central to Joseph Heller's antiwar classic, Catch-22. President Lincoln and General Stonewall Jackson both had something to say about Mennonites. Garrison Keillor tells Mennonite jokes. These are just a few of the dozens of fascinating media references, dating from the early 1500s through the present, which are chronicled and analyzed here. Mennonites, although often considered media-shy, have in fact used media to great advantage in shaping their faith and identity. Beginning with the Martyrs Mirror, this book examines the writings of Mennonite authors John Howard Yoder, Donald Kraybill, Rudy Wiebe, Rhoda Janzen, and Malcolm Gladwell. Citing books, film, art, theater, and Ngram, the online culturomic tool developed by Harvard University and Google, the author demonstrates that Mennonites "punch above their weight class" in the media, and especially in print.

PAUL AND THE DISPERSION The Teachers Edition Paul and The Dispersion is for Bible students. Maps are provided for students to follow Pauls journeys to foreign nations. By tracing his land and sea voyages, students will learn the reason why Paul carried Jesus name to those far off places. Students will discover exactly to whom Paul was sent by Jesus. For example, Paul also evangelized Jews in their synagogues. (Acts 9:20; 17:1,2; Romans 1:16) They were Jews who had scattered from Israel many years before and who are also known as The Dispersion. This is rarely or never emphasized by traditional teaching, a teaching that emphasizes Pauls apostleship to Gentiles only. What was special about Paul that enabled him to teach in synagogues? First, Paul was a Jew himself and would know Jewish laws, customs and history. He spoke their Hebrew language and possibly Greek. He was able to communicate directly with them. Secondly, Paul was a Pharisee and knew Gods law cold. (Acts 22:2, 3) He was able to quote Hebrew scripture, the Christians Old Testament. (Isaiah 59:20; Romans 11:26) Students will find that there is overwhelming Biblical evidence that Paul was not solely an apostle to Gentiles but that he was also sent out to Jews who had scattered to foreign nations. Then, ask yourself this: Why would a non-Jew, Gentile, be expected to know or have an interest in a Jewish Gods Bible and follow Pauls teaching? Did Paul turn Gentiles away? By no means! He did not turn away his vital travel companion, Aristarchus, when he asked for help. (Acts 16:9; 27:2) Jews of the Dispersion had scattered and worshipped in their Synagogues at Damascus, Salamis, Antioch of Pisidia, Iconium, Philippi, Thessalonica, Berea, Athens, Corinth, Ephesus.
