The objective of the symposium and corresponding publications has been to review the current state-of-the-art and science of ice hockey injury prevention."

This work deals with summarizing fifty years of safety in ice hockey conducted by ASTM Subcommittee F08.15 on Sports Equipment, Playing Surfaces, and Facilities. It provides a brief review of the standards created and of the five previous symposia on safety in ice hockey and other symposia dealing with significant traumatic injury presented by Subcommittee F08.15 over the years. It also briefly examines three areas in which future developments may be of significance: Can concussion risk reduction be achieved through helmet standards modification? Is a helmet standard needed for youths and females? Is there a need to modify ASTM F1587, Standard Specification for Head and Face Protective Equipment for Ice Hockey Goaltenders , the goaltender head and face protector standard? Reasons for asking these questions and some of the requirements needed to effect these modifications are briefly discussed.
