“Thick with crime, passion, and backroom banter” (The New Yorker), Roscoe is an odyssey of great scope and linguistic verve, a deadly, comic masterpiece from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Ironweed It's V-J Day, the war is over, and Roscoe Conway, after twenty-six years as the second in command of Albany's notorious political machine, decides to quit politics forever. But there's no way out, and only his Machiavellian imagination can help him cope with the erupting disasters. Every step leads back to the past—to the early loss of his true love, the takeover of city hall, the machine's fight with FDR and Al Smith to elect a governor, and the methodical assassination of gangster Jack "Legs" Diamond. William Kennedy’s Albany Cycle of novels reflect what he once described as the fusion of his imagination with a single place. A native and longtime resident of Albany, New York, his work moves from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century, chronicling family life, the city’s netherworld, and its spheres of power—financial, ethnic, political—often among the Irish-Americans who dominated the city in this period. The novels in his cycle include, Legs, Billy Phelan’s Greatest Game, Ironweed, Quinn’s Book, Very Old Bones, The Flaming Corsage, and Roscoe.

Robert J. Cross arrived in Roscoe in 1835, and by the 1840s the village had two churches, sawmills, a gristmill, a woolen mill, and a distillery. Roscoe had become the musical center of the area, with the city's brass band performing at the ceremony for the laying of Beloit College's cornerstone. Founded by hardworking, temperate abolitionists, the village was named after an Englishman well known for his antislavery poems. The villagers were interested in culture, education, and civic improvement. The annual fall festival, which was famous for its pageants and parades, was begun to provide funding for sidewalks, electricity, telephones, and a fire department. The fall festival continues to be an annual community event, and the Harlem-Roscoe Fire Protection District is one of the finest in the area.

In 1948, in Mitchell, Missouri, a small town of ornate garden gates, bearded iris and harmless gossip, bad things shouldn’t happen. But too soon and too painfully, eight-year-old Roscoe Hammer learns that they do. His baby sister is stricken with a sudden, life-altering illness and as her condition worsens, his family is overcome with despair. While his mother drifts into depression, his father struggles to fill the void. When Roscoe embarks on a plan to help the family heal, he finds himself in the middle of a series of interconnected mysteries. Who killed Crazy George Mabry’s little dog? Who beat George with a tree branch and left him for dead in Harmony Park? Who — or what — lives in the abandoned shed behind Gertie Paulson’s grocery store? And who shot and killed the town’s bully? Roscoe’s search for the answers — often in the companionship of his best friend, Fatty Gilchrist — is at times frightening, laughable, heart-rending and heart-warming. When all the “facts” are in, when he fears that he alone is in possession of the whole truth, he runs headlong into a lesson that will affect his life forever: There is no such thing as the whole truth and the part of realty we cannot see is often more important than that which we can. Walk the streets of Mitchell, Missouri with Roscoe and his dog Ranger and his friend Fatty, and make their hometown your own. Listen as they try to decide what is right and just and then reflect on your own sense of the same. And then learn again — because you have always known it but have only forgotten — nothing shapes us like the things that happen to us, the people we meet, and the secrets we keep when we are children.
