Co-operative Mag. ii. 217. f Ihid. i. 329. Another paper speaks of a community, beginning from families of Wilmington and Philadelphia, and intended to be "located" in the Great Valley, twenty miles from Lancaster and forty from Philadelphia. A little later, we hear of two communities in the immediate neighbourhood of New Harmony: of which the one was named Macluria, as a compliment to an able coadjutor of Owen; the other Feiba Peven, a name intended to express by a pedantic memoria technica, the latitude and longitude of the place. Macluria was settled by backwoodsmen, men with large families, much addicted to camp meetings and revivals, and strongly prejudiced against new-fangled methods of cultivation. These people were about 150 in number, with 1,200 acres of land; and with the help of some capital lent to them by Owen at 4 per cent., they built a few cabins arranged in something like a parallelogram, and laboured hard at their land in the slovenly fashion of their country. The community of Feiba consisted of a few Englishmen from the neighbourhood of Messrs. Birkbeck and Flower, with few children, and, like the Maclurians, with 1,200 acres of land, situated between New Harmony and Macluria. They were skilful and neat farmers, but, as was said, a little too much addicted to whisky. Six months later, t another community makes its appearance; that of Kendal in Ohio: a flourishing concern, with more and more dwellings rising up, though still insufficient to house the families which are pouring in; Co-operative...

Robert Owen was one of the most important and controversial figures of his generation. Born in 1771, he lived through the Age of Revolutions and was personally touched the ideas and dramatic changes that characterised that era. Profiting enormously through the first half of his lifetime from the rise of industry, he devoted much of his time thereafter to espousing social and economic philosophy which could serve as a corrective to what he saw as the;excesses' of progress. Much of this derived from his own experience in managing cotton mills and strongly emphasised the importance of environment, education and, ultimately, co-operation. He gained fame - even notoriety - as a social reformer, applying radical ideas in the mills at New Lanark, and subsequently at the experimental community of New Harmony, Indiana, USA. Long after his death in 1858 his ideas continued to inspire others. The hagiography generated by his disciples did neither his name nor reputation much good, since they transformed the 'Social Father' of their movement into the 'Father of Socialism' a sobriquet that ill fits him, yet it sticks to this day.Ian Donnachie's engaging yet judicious study is the first biography of Owen for fifty years. This book was originally published by Tuckwell Press in 2000.

J. F. C. Harrison has written that ‘for each age there is a new view of Mr Owen’, which is proof of the fertility and continuing relevance of his ideas. Not just in Britain and America but today around the world anti-poverty campaigners, birth-controllers, collectivists, communitarians, co-operators, ecologists, educationalists, environmentalists, feminists, humanitarians, internationalists, paternalistic capitalists, secularists, campaigners for social justice, trade unionists, urban planners, utopians, welfare reformers can all find something to admire and inspire in the treasure trove that is the thought and actions of Robert Owen. Owen was a creative genius of global significance, a radical writer and activist of international reputation and reach who has inspired those seeking to change human society for the better. The contributors to this volume include not only many of the recognized experts on the life, work and legacy of Owen, but also work from younger scholars or scholars coming to the field afresh. The volume presents the most recent and original research on Owen. Owen notoriously (and impressively) dabbled in many spheres, and this is reflected in the its breadth of content. The unifying themes are Owen’s profile in his own time, and the relevance of his ideas for the generations that followed. His importance for educational and social philosophy, for political economy and for the political theory of socialism are all discussed, as are his contribution as a philanthropic employer, his political activities and the specificities of his historical context.
