From a dovecot in the Dutch village of Dorst to the Concert Hallin Bruges, from an art gallery in Whitechapel to the City Archives of Bordeaux, the oeuvre on which Robbrecht en Daem Architects has worked since its foundation in 1975 has developed a variety and maturity that stands out on the international stage. This insightful book tells the story of Paul Robbrecht, Johannes Robbrecht, and Hilde Daem from the 1980s: their research and interests, their "lost souls," and their successes. Drawing on new and unpublished visual material, a picture and project accordion shows a wide selection of 63 projects that are divided into five key themes from different perspectives.

This book offers a first comprehensive overview of the work of Robbrecht en Daem architects, from their international breakthrough with the AUE pavilions for Documenta IX, up till their recent transformation of the Whitechapel Gallery in London. The architecture of Robbrecht en Daem is represented through the spectrum of seven key projects - a dovecote in Dorst, a public square in Knokke, a woodland cabin in Flanders, two high views in Boston and Lincoln, a concert hall in Bruges, a former dairy in Gaasbeek, their own office in Ghent - which are extensively documented with sketches, plans and photographs by Kristien Daem. An interview of Paul Robbrecht by Stefan Devoldere and Iwan Strauven, offers a privileged view on the intellectual framework of their production, while Maarten Delbeke analyses the body of work with extreme precision. From lookout tower to concert hall, from art gallery to municipal archives an overview of 40 major projects completes this monograph and documents the rare variety and maturity of the architecture of Paul Robbrecht and Hilde Daem. Paul Robbrecht and Hilde Daem have been active as architects in the Belgian city of Ghent since 1975. Their work moves between the local traditions of Flemish building and cosmopolitanism acquired, in the main, as a result of their collaborations with international artists on exhibition and museum spaces. Their 35 years experience is enough to produce a mature body of exceptional work attentive to context and local technique, yet one aimed beyond the borders of their country. Their buildings address different typologies, from cultural buildings, spaces for art and public spaces to conversions of old offices, in which painstaking construction with traditional materials and schemes that are simple in layout and of great spatial richness inscribe their work within a certain central European tradition of the ordinary. This number of 2G presents 18 projects by Robbrecht en Daem, 15 of them built, which extend from public spaces for various Belgian cities (Antwerp, Ghent and Knokke) and urban amenities of major importance like Bruges Concert Hall to small projects inserted in the landscape, like a cabin in the woods, a pair of observation towers and a dovecote. The works are preceded by two critical essays by British architect William Mann - currently also Director of the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London - and by Iwona Blazwick, and are rounded off by thoughts from Paul Robbercht himself about the relationship between architecture and painting
