"Many asteroids are 'rubble piles', conglomerations of weakly gravitationally bounded material. Impacts and spin-out events can produce a population of gravitational bound objects in orbit that can impact the surface at low velocity and a distribution of impact angles. For the first study, we present low velocity, oblique impacts of spherical projectiles into fine sand. With high speed video and fluorescent markers on the projectiles we track projectile trajectory and spin during impact. We delineate impact velocities and angles where projectiles ricochet, roll-out from their impact crater, or stop within their impact crater. We estimate constraints on projectile radius, velocity, and impact angle that would allow projectiles on asteroids to ricochet or roll away from initial impact site. The critical grazing impact angle dividing ricochets from roll-outs increases with impact velocity and is matched by an empirical model that balances a lift force against gravity during the rebound phase. The required friction coefficient during the penetration phase is 4-5 times lower than for sand suggesting it is fluidized near the projectile surface during penetration. In a second study, we compared ricocheting impactors with the same impact velocity and angle into granular media with different mean grain size. The ratio of projectile diameter to mean grain length ranges from 4 in our coarsest medium to 50 in our finest sand. We measure coefficients of restitutions, the ratio of pre- to post-impact horizontal and vertical velocity components, and the angle of deflection caused by the impact in the horizontal plane. Coefficients of restitution are sensitive to mean grain size with the horizontal coefficient about twice as large for our coarsest gravel compared to our finest sand. This implies that coefficients for hydro-static-like, drag-like and lift-like forces, used in empirical force laws are sensitive to mean grain size, with the lift coefficient being the most sensitive. The deflection angles are largest in the coarser media and their size approximately depends on grain size to the 3/2 power. The dependence of impact dynamics on substrate size distribution should be considered in future models for impacts on granular asteroid surfaces. For the third study, we consider how a subsurface seismic pulse affects the surface of an asteroid distant from the impact site. Using dry polydisperse gravel mixture, we film and track the ejecta launched by a single upward propagating pressure pulse. We find ejecta trajectories are independent of particle size, and collisions primarily take place upon landing, where smaller particles are scattered off larger particles, a process dubbed 'ballistic sorting'. A single strong pulse can strand previously buried boulders on the surface and is an additional mechanism for large boulders present on the surface of rubble asteroids such as 162173 Ryugu, 101955 Bennu and 25143 Itokawa"--Pages viii-ix.

The thesis presents a tool to create rubble pile asteroid simulants for use in numerical impact experiments, and provides evidence that the asteroid disruption threshold and the resultant fragment size distribution are sensitive to the distribution of internal voids. This thesis represents an important step towards a deeper understanding of fragmentation processes in the asteroid belt, and provides a tool to infer the interior structure of rubble pile asteroids. Most small asteroids are 'rubble piles' – re-accumulated fragments of debris from earlier disruptive collisions. The study of fragmentation processes for rubble pile asteroids plays an essential part in understanding their collisional evolution. An important unanswered question is “what is the distribution of void space inside rubble pile asteroids?” As a result from this thesis, numerical impact experiments can now be used to link surface features to the internal structure and therefore help to answer this question. Applying this model to asteroid Šteins, which was imaged from close range by the Rosetta spacecraft, a large hill-like structure is shown to be most likely primordial, while a catena of pits can be interpreted as evidence for the existence of fracturing of pre-existing internal voids.

Explosive, revealing, and intelligent, The Red Circle provides a uniquely personal glimpse into one of the most challenging and secretive military training courses in the world. Now including an excerpt from The Killing School: Inside the World's Deadliest Sniper Program BEFORE HE COULD FORGE A BAND OF ELITE WARRIORS... HE HAD TO BECOME ONE HIMSELF. Brandon Webb's experiences in the world's most elite sniper corps are the stuff of legend. From his grueling years of training in Naval Special Operations to his combat tours in the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan, The Red Circle provides a rare and riveting look at the inner workings of the U.S. military through the eyes of a covert operations specialist. Yet it is Webb's distinguished second career as a lead instructor for the shadowy "sniper cell" and Course Manager of the Navy SEAL Sniper Program that trained some of America's finest and deadliest warriors-including Marcus Luttrell and Chris Kyle-that makes his story so compelling. Luttrell credits Webb's training with his own survival during the ill-fated 2005 Operation Redwing in Afghanistan. Kyle went on to become the U.S. military's top marksman, with more than 150 confirmed kills. From a candid chronicle of his student days, going through the sniper course himself, to his hair-raising close calls with Taliban and al Qaeda forces in the northern Afghanistan wilderness, to his vivid account of designing new sniper standards and training some of the most accomplished snipers of the twenty-first century, Webb provides a rare look at the making of the Special Operations warriors who are at the forefront of today's military.

Michael Havelock’s world died on a moonlit beach on the Costa Brava as he watched his partner and lover, double agent Jenna Karas, efficiently gunned down by his own agency. There’s nothing left for him but to quit the game, get out. Then, in one frantic moment on a crowded railroad platform in Rome, Havelock sees Jenna. Racing around the globe in search of his beautiful betrayer, Havelock is now marked for death by both U.S. and Russian assassins, trapped in a massive mosaic of treachery created by a top-level mole with the world in his fist: Parsifal. Praise for Robert Ludlum and The Parsifal Mosaic “[Robert] Ludlum’s narrative imagination is a force of nature.”—The New York Times “As fast-paced and absorbing as any he’s written.”—Newsday “The suspense never lets up.”—The Atlanta Journal-Constitution “A crackling good yarn.”—Los Angeles Times Book Review

The Singularity. It is the era of the posthuman. Artificial intelligences have surpassed the limits of human intellect. Biotechnological beings have rendered people all but extinct. Molecular nanotechnology runs rampant, replicating and reprogramming at will. Contact with extraterrestrial life grows more imminent with each new day. Struggling to survive and thrive in this accelerated world are three generations of the Macx clan: Manfred, an entrepreneur dealing in intelligence amplification technology whose mind is divided between his physical environment and the Internet; his daughter, Amber, on the run from her domineering mother, seeking her fortune in the outer system as an indentured astronaut; and Sirhan, Amber’s son, who finds his destiny linked to the fate of all of humanity. For something is systematically dismantling the nine planets of the solar system. Something beyond human comprehension. Something that has no use for biological life in any form...
