DOWNLOAD EBOOKOne of the most significant differences between the New World's major areas of high culture is that Mesoamerica had no beasts of burden and wool, while the Andes had both. Four members of the camelid family--wild guanacos and vicunas, and domestic llamas and alpacas--were native to the Andes. South American peoples relied on these animals for meat and wool, and as beasts of burden to transport goods all over the Andes. In this book, Duccio Bonavia tackles major questions about these camelids, from their domestication to their distribution at the time of the Spanish conquest. One of Bonavia's hypotheses is that the arrival of the Europeans and their introduced Old World animals forced the Andean camelids away from the Pacific coast, creating the (mistaken) impression that camelids were exclusively high-altitude animals. Bonavia also addresses the diseases of camelids and their population density, suggesting that the original camelid populations suffered from a different type of mange than that introduced by the Europeans. This new mange, he believes, was one of the causes behind the great morbidity of camelids in Colonial times. In terms of domestication, while Bonavia believes that the major centers must have been the puna zone intermediate zones, he adds that the process should not be seen as restricted to a single environmental zone. Bonavia's landmark study of the South American camelids is now available for the first time in English. This new edition features an updated analysis and comprehensive bibliography. In the Spanish edition of this book, Bonavia lamented the fact that the zooarchaeological data from R. S. MacNeish's Ayacucho Project had yet to be published. In response, the Ayacucho's Project's faunal analysts, Elizabeth S. Wing and Kent V. Flannery, have added appendices on the Ayacucho results to this English edition. This book will be of broad interest to archaeologists, zoologists, social anthropologists, ethnohistorians, and a wide range of students.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKAgglutinated foraminifera are among the most widely distributed and abundant groups of marine meiofauna in some environments (e. g. marshes, deep-sea). They are tolerant of environmental extremes, tending to live where the evolutionarily more advanced calcareous foraminifera cannot survive. However, largely because of historical reasons, the amount of scientific effort invested in this group has been small in comparison to studies of other marine organisms. The NATO Advanced Studies Institute conference on the paleoecology, biostratigraphy, paleoceanography and taxonomy of agglutinated foraminifera in TUbingen September 17-29, 1989, was a direct outgrowth of two previous workshops on agglutinated foraminifers held in Amsterdam in September 1981 (IW AF I) and in Vienna in June 1986 (IW AF 11). As such, the TUbingen conference constitutes the Third International Workshop on Agglutinated Foraminifera (IW AF III) and was organised to provide a platform for synthesizing the current state of knowledge on this group of organisms, and to strengthen interactions between basic research and applied micropaleontology. One of the main underlying themes of the conferen:e was to identify topics in the paleoecology, biostratigraphy, paleoceanography and taxonomy of agglutinated foraminifera which are in urgent need of further research. About 80 scientists and students from 5 continents participated in the TUbingen conference, which is one measure of the growth in interest in agglutinated foraminifers over the past decade. During four days of technical sessions, scientific results were communicated in the form of 34 oral presentations and 15 poster displays.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe evolution of the Argentina Continental Margin during the Quaternary and the stratigraphic and morphosedimentary configuration responded to climatic variability, oceanographic changes, glacioeustatic fluctuations and tectono-isostatic processes, which began to impact on the margin during previous geological periods. The final modeling of the margin was achieved in the late Miocene, when the interaction between the Antarctic and North Atlantic water-masses favored climatic and oceanographic changes with a profound effect on morphosedimentary features. In the Quaternary, the different regions of the margin distinctly responded to such changes. Whereas in the shelf the main modeling factors were the sea-level fluctuations of glacioeustatic origin and consequent marine-continental stratigraphic records, in the slope (particularly in the sector corresponding to the passive margin) the prevailing effect was the interaction between water-masses and the sea floor, giving origin to contouritic depositional systems accompanied of gravity processes responsible of turbiditic and mass-wasting deposits. Different relationships between contouritic and turbiditic facies respond to distinct combinations of oceanic circulation variability and the indirect effect on the sea floor of sea-level fluctuations. As a result of this complexity in the regional processes in the framework of the broad hemispheric oceanographic-climatic conditioning factors, the ACM can be considered as a complete archive for the Southern Ocean.
