DOWNLOAD EBOOKHarlan County Dam, on the Republican River, is a rolled-earth fill structure with a maximum height of about 100 ft above the valley floor. It is 10,477 ft long along the crest and contains about 13.5 million cu yd of earth fill. A gravity-type concrete structure 1351 ft long, located on the left (north) riverbank, contains a controlled-flow spillway and outlet facilities for flood control and irrigation. The spillway is 720 ft long and has a maximum discharge capacity of 457,000 cfs with the reservoir at maximum, surcharge elevation of 1974.6 msl. Maximum irrigation and surcharge pool elevations will create net heads of 60 and 90 ft, respectively, above the flood-plain floor. This study is one of a series of similar studies of the foundation and soil mechanics features of earth dams recently constructed by the Corps of Engineers. In these studies original design data are reviewed, construction experience is summarized, and performance of the completed structures is compared with design predictions to provide information for use in the design and construction of future similar projects.
