DOWNLOAD EBOOKReports on the short-term impacts of conventional (clear-cutting) and alternative (partial cutting) harvesting practices on the abundance and biodiversity of elements of forest soil fauna. Two groups of fauna were studied: ground-dwelling carabid beetles, and soil-dwelling springtails, mites, and Diptera larvae. The study area was in the Black Sturgeon Forest about 120 kilometres north-east of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Results presented include the effects of various harvesting treatments on species diversity and on individual species; effects of drought observed by comparing 1994 and 1995 samples; and impacts of logging trails on soil springtails and mites. Management implications for boreal mixedwood forests are discussed.
