Excerpt from Reports of the Progress of Applied Chemistry, 1921, Vol. 6 Another new departure is the application of the thermo-compres sor system to drying. A drying kiln very similar to the well-known rotary roaster is constructed with hollow metal hearths the steam given off by the material as it passes over the hearths is withdrawn. Excerpt from Reports of the Progress of Applied Chemistry, 1920, Vol. 5 The importance of having the best type of plant for chemical processes can hardly be overestimated. The cost of repairs and maintenance is largely dependent on the design of the apparatus, and a balance must be struck between this and the saving in labour and efficiency before a proper decision can be arrived at as to the most economical installation. Naturally, the more elaborate and complicated designs are the more costly to instal and also to main tain, but in many cases simplicity and cheapness are synonymous with failure. It is a great mistake on the other hand to choose an appliance just because it is novel and mechanically attractive. When it is remembered that in some processes the capital charges and costs of depreciation make up about 40 or 50% of the net cost of the product, the value of perfected plant and high efficiency will be fully appreciated. Excerpt from Reports of the Progress of Applied Chemistry, 1916, Vol. 1 It will be observed that, apart from the sections mentioned above, some of the sections of the classification followed in the Society's Journal are not covered in these Reports. The sections on Agricultural Chemistry, the Chemistry of Foods, and Analysis are dealt with in the admirable series of Annual Reports issued by the Chemical Society, whilst for obvious reasons it isi undesirable to include a section on Explosives at the present time. Excerpt from Reports of the Progress of Applied Chemistry, 1922, Vol. 7 The great advances made during the war years and immediately after were, no doubt, in a large part due to the increased output of chemicals and allied products which was called for and the consequent working of all plant at its fullest capacity. From this intensive working it resulted that defects in design and construction, and in adaptation to the end in view, were very forcibly impressed on both the work's manager and the engineer as well as upon the owner and fostered the Spirit of invention of new, and improvement of existing, plant, and, as there was plenty of money available, little hindrance was felt from this cause. Taking the foregoing remarks into consideration, it is not to be wondered at that the past year has been so little remarkable for new ideas about plant. At the same time a good deal of steady progress has been made, especially in details. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
