Excerpt from Report of the State Board of Geological Survey of Michigan for the Year 1903 The whole country is underlain by clay, but this is generally far from the surface, sometimes 100 feet or more. Some of the depressions have clay surface soil. They were probably under cover of the ice sheet at the time of formation of the neighboring moraines and sand plains, or were the bottoms of glacial lakes. The lowest portions of the depressions, whether these have sand or clay as surface soil, are almost always occupied by swamps or lakes. Through the swamps the very lowest part is often marked by a meandering stream channel, the line of drainage for all the region which lies between the neighboring ridges.
