As a precautionary measure, the catch level for this species should not exceed the average over the last three years of 115 000 tonnes. For bonga, the recommendation from 2006 is maintained as no new information is available on this species, and the Working Group recommended that the catch level should not exceed 42 000 tonnes. - Le Groupe a examine l'etat actuel des ressources de petits pelagiques en Afrique nord occidentale en fait des projections sur le developpement, l'effort futur et les niveaux de capture. DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe Working Group used dynamic production models for all stocks. An index of environmental quality has been introduced in the production models since 2005. For most of the stocks, the time series from the acoustic surveys with the R/V DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN and national research vessels are used as the index of abundance in the assessments and future assessments would therefore depend on the continuation of the time series by the local research vessels. The Norwegian research vessel, DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN surveyed the subregion from 1995 to 2006, carrying out acoustic surveys during the months October-December each year. In addition, from 2001 to 2003, the vessel carried out acoustic surveys covering the same area from May to July. From 2004 to 2006, intercalibrations and parallel surveys were carried out between R/V DR.

It was attended by around 100 participants. Forty-three oral presentations and 30 posters were presented. The Symposium was split into four main sessions: resources and exploitation-biology and ecology of main resources and status of fisheries; dynamics and variability of pelagic fish populations and environmental influences; methods and models for assessing small pelagic fish stocks; and management of fisheries on shared resources. The Symposium ended with a general discussion aiming to identify specific problems to address as well as providing recommendations on ways forward. These Proceedings present a summary of the various sessions as well as on the outcomes of the discussion. DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe Workshop on the Age Estimation of Sardine and Sardinella in Northwest Africa was organized in Casablanca, Morocco, from 4 to 9 December 2006. The Workshop was funded by project GCP/INT/730/NOR "International Cooperation with the Nansen Programme. Fisheries Management and Marine Environment" and organized by FAO and the National Institute of Fisheries Research (INRH). Altogether 15 scientists from seven countries and FAO participated. The Workshop reviewed and discussed the results of an otolith exchange that had been carried out in 2006 and which included both sardine and sardinella otoliths from different locations. The final outcome of the meeting consisted of revised agreed guidelines for the preparation and interpretation of sardine and sardinella otoliths. A new otolith exchange was initiated just after the Workshop to consolidate results.
