Most believers raised in churches that contend for the King James Bible as the infallible word of God are familiar with 2 Timothy 2:15 and the idea of dispensationalism. In fact, most Bible believers are so familiar with their Scofield Reference Bibles they can tell you which side of the page a certain passage is on from memory. For many Bible believers, dispensationalism, as a theological system, answers so called “problem passages” that clearly teach salvation by means other than “by grace...through faith” in the finished work of Jesus Christ. At the same time, many King James Only believers remain unsettled or unsure about the differences in salvation under the various dispensations. Their pastors may not emphasize or teach these distinctions, or they may have fallen prey to King James Only preachers and authors who teach just the opposite. Some of these authors have been teaching this faulty dispensational position for years while others have more recently modified this as their position. In this booklet we will briefly trace the development of dispensationalism as it relates to salvation under the various dispensations. We will show that the dispensationalism being taught by many King James Only preachers and authors is nothing more than a revised dispensational position rooted in Calvinism. We will also dismantle the faulty premises of this revised position by addressing the major points and examining their books in light of the Book.

This book is written for my sons and is a patchwork of my thoughts, prayers, journal entries, and emails. These emails, etc. were written to family, friends, and the youth group students I have had the privilege of getting to know and love for the past 25 years. Some of the questions I get are about creation/evolution, the deity of Christ, the end times as well as personal issues such as sexual purity, and how to live a holy life. Part of the book is also about the journey God has brought me through in my personal life. My hope is that however God uses this book, that it pleases and glorifies Him.

At one time there was a great deal of interest in the topic of holiness—but not so much anymore. Theological wrangling and impossible legalism has left many in the church frustrated and confused, with part of that confusion arising from idealism in the pulpit that rang hollow in the lives and experiences of ordinary believers. But what if there was significant help from God in the enterprise of living a morally triumphant life, where habitual sinning was not inevitable, and where the development of godly character was possible and found through a maturing relationship with God and growth in the Christian life? The apostle Paul certainly thought so. In Help for Holiness, author and senior pastor Paul F. Evans revisits the topic of holiness and explores Paul’s admonition that believers shouldn’t seek more rules (legalism) nor give in to moral pessimism that says we cannot help but sin every day in word, thought, and deed. Instead, through morally transformative justification and regeneration, followed by a commitment to the crucifixion of the old life in the death of Christ, we can be raised to new life, which, through ongoing surrender to the Spirit, can in fact produce the conduct and character God is looking for. In this postmodern world, we do not need to abandon an emphasis on righteous and holy living—God really has made a provision for us to succeed morally. Holiness was started by grace, and God will complete it in us by grace through the Spirit!
