Grasscutters – large rodents commonly found in the wild in areas of grassland, clearings, wet or marshy areas in Africa – breed prolifically, grow quickly and are easy to rear. Sometimes more commonly known as ‘hedgehogs’ or ‘agouti’, their meat is high in protein and value, making their rearing an ideal alternative to poaching. This practical, user-friendly guide provides extension material for unconventional animal breeding. With liberal use of illustrations, tables and sample records, it describes how to rear grasscutters for food and for profit. Chapters cover breeding conditions, housing, reproduction, handling and feeding. Production planning and disease management are also detailed, including how to prevent disease and an overview of some possible illnesses and proposed treatments. With its illustration of costs for financial planning and a list of useful contacts, this manual provides an ideal source of information and guidance for farmers, rural communities and extension workers across the region.

Large quantities of water are appropriated to produce the feed annually consumed in global livestock production. Rising concerns about increasing competition for water resources and projected increase in demand for livestock products make it imperative to look for strategies to sustainably increase livestock production, with water being one key natural resource to consider. Using a combination of different datasets, a mechanistic livestock model, and a dynamic vegetation model, we estimate the annual consumptive water use (CWU) in the global livestock sector associated with crops and fodder cultivated on cropland and grazed biomass from pastures.

With the objective of gaining a better insight into the challenges and opportunities of the livestock sub-sector in West Africa, FAO has conducted several studies and held various workshops in recent years. The outcomes of these studies and workshops conducted between 2009 and 2014 were published and distributed as hard copy reports and disseminated as on-line publications. These reports included topics such as value chains, cross-border transhumance, animal feed resources, priority animal diseases, among others, were informative in their own right. Still, the fact that they targeted specific areas of livestock in a fragmented manner did not address the need of readers whose wish was to have a comprehensive understanding of the livestock sector in West Africa. It is in response to this demand for a comprehensive outlook of the West African Livestock sub-sector that different reports and studies have been compiled into this one book. The book has twelve chapters, covering almost all aspects of livestock in the region. Attempts were made to enrich the information provided by including eight short case studies focusing on different aspects of the livestock sub-sector in West Africa. The book attempts to fill the gap of a need for comprehensive information on the potential, performance, challenges, and prospects of the livestock sub-sector in West Africa.

One path to solving the food security problem in Africa is to broaden the spectrum of crops cultivated and animals husbanded on the continent to include non-traditional species such as wildlife, and to develop new and innovative production systems to complement the conventional systems. In looking at the role of wildlife in food security in Africa, this publication is concerned not only with the direct contribution of wildlife as a food resource, but also with the influence of wildlife on access to food through employment and income generation, its influence on physical, spiritual and cultural well-being of people. as well as its positive and negative influences on food production capabilities.--Introduction.

A number of arguments are made by an international group of authors in this though provoking book about an understudied and socially important context. A future in which financial wealth transfers across the North-South divide from richer to poorer countries is far from sufficient for the relief of poverty and the pursuit of sustainability. Caution must be taken when growth is achieved through the liquidation of the natural wealth of poorer nations, in order to maintain a global economic status quo. Neither poverty reduction nor sustainability will ultimately be achieved. The financial collapse and social upheaval that might result will make the most recent economic downturn look trivial by comparison. What is more urgently needed instead, as argued in this book, is collaboration for sustainability and innovation in the global South, especially building on models originally developed in the South that are transferable to the North. In pursuit of a sustainable and more equitable future, the book examines such topics as Cross-Border Innovation in South-North Fair Trade Supply Chains; Potential Pollution Prevention Programs in Bangladesh; Digital Literacy and Social Inclusion in the South through Collective Storytelling and Eco-innovation at the ‘Bottom of the Pyramid’. Many of these stories and have not been told and need greater visibility. The book contributes in a meaningfully to the discussion of how innovation and sustainability science can benefit both sides in South-North innovation collaborations. It provides useful introduction to the topics, as well as valuable critiques and best practices. This back-and-forth flow of ideas and innovation is itself new and promising in the modern pursuit of a fair and sustainable future for all regions of our planet.

This book considers Congolese society in a broader framework of social and environmental dimensions. It explains to a large extent how these dimensions depend on governance and assesses the impact of governance on the indices of human development and quality of life. Our Environment, Our Wealth is about environment for development to help fight against poverty. Protecting the environment is essential to attain a better life for the people. Whether its about climate change, energy innovation for clean air, forest management, fresh water, or waste, the environment affects all areas of our lives. Although these phenomena are not new; interest in environmental issues has been renewed in recent years. Faced with such challenges, specialists capable of combining natural and social sciences and humanities are needed to understand the different factors involved in its development.
