DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Truth Applied, or Bible Readings In Truth Applied, the object has been in the plainest, clearest, and most direct Way, to reach the conscience through the understanding; and to this end the flowers of rhetoric have been studiously avoided; the circumlocution of high-sounding phrases has been rejected, and the one aim has been so to speak that all could understand, and that the com mon people would hear gladly. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Bible Reading-Book: Containing Such Portions of the History, Biography, Poetry, Prophecy, Precepts, and Parables, of the Old and New Testaments, as Form a Connected Narrative, in the Exact Words of Scripture In offering to the public this Bible reading-book, designed to take the place of the 'holy Scriptures in the School-room, and, in some degree, to supply those familiar lessons from the Inspired writers, which are the highest wisdom taught in the household some explanation of the plan, and motives of the compiler, may be expected. All Christians will, probably, agree, that the great purpose of Divine Revelation was to make manifest what man is to believe concerning God, and what duty God requires of man. But how many of the millions who now have the Bible in their homes think of it as a continuous history of the moral condition of the human race, from the creation to the final judgment day? The unity of the narrative is overlooked, owing to the variety of means employed for the same end, and to the many changes of agents, by whom God was carrying onward his great design of salvation. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Wisdom-Literature of the Old Testament The present volume completes the short Introduction to the Poetical Books of the Bible begun in The Praises of Israel, published last year. The phraseology of the title is not perfectly accurate, for Ecclesiastes is not poetical, and the Song of Songs does not properly belong to Wisdom-Literature. But the books of the Bible treated of in these two small volumes belong to the same group of Scriptures, and are conveniently studied together. If these brief Manuals prove to be of service to readers who have not time or opportunity to use larger and more valuable works, the labour of preparing them will be fully repaid. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Books of the Old Testament Nearly all Old Testament scholars in Germany, England, and America, who have been trained in the universities and are not adherents of the Roman Catholic faith, are agreed as to the main results which have been achieved by careful investigations carried on during the nineteenth century, though there are necessarily differences of opinion upon secondary details. It is important that the reader should realise the immense gulf which separates the modern physical conditions of book-making, since the discovery of printing, from the ancient conditions when all records were laboriously copied by hand upon such rough materials as skins or papyrus and were preserved in rolls. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Re-Discovery of the Old Testament Such a task is attempted here. Into the minutiae of scholarship I do not enter, not because I regard them as meaningless, but because their study lies behind, rather than in, this book. Elaborate documentation, which is rightly found in work intended for scholars, is here dispensed with, and the focus of interest is in the edifice of Old Testament thought rather than in the foundations of its study. Yet it is my hope that the edifice stands squarely on the foundations. For only so is it secure. If these pages can help any reader to a fuller apprehension of the religious meaning of this most wonderful Book, they will have fulfilled their purpose. For Biblical quotations I have kept largely to familiar words, though I have frequently modified the translation to some extent for reasons which are not stated, since they would distract the general reader. In no case has a change been introduced for a priori or dogmatic reasons, but only where philological or textual support could be provided to justify the change. It is a deep grief to me that while this book has been in the press Principal H. Wheeler Robinson has passed from our midst. I have left the Dedication unchanged. I have to thank Professor A. R.Johnson for his help in reading the proofs, and for his stimulating friendship, which has yielded many suggestions embodied in this book I have also to thank Professor T. W. Manson for reading my work in proof - and for many other kindnesses. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
