Among the Cherokee there is a legend, a myth about witches who steal from the sick and dying. These witches are called raven-mockers, after the sound they make when they scour the night for victims. The legend is true but the Cherokee got one thing wrong about raven-mockers. They're not witches at all; they're fairies. Now Seren must find proof of their crimes, so she can stop the raven-mockers from breaking the truce between fairies and humans. But what she finds is a truth far more shocking than she ever expected.

When a bookish codebreaker and a dashing spy are reunited, their lives depend on their ability to resist temptation. But fate is a mistress who cannot be denied. . . England, 1815. Heloise Hampden is a high-value asset to the Crown. When she cracks the enemy’s most recent communication, French agents are sent to silence her. But it’s the agent assigned to protect Heloise who poses the greatest threat to her heart: William de l’Isle, Viscount Ravenwood. Raven’s imprisonment six years ago has made him wary of love, but his heart still pounds whenever he’s within ten paces of Heloise. He’s a shadowed Hades pining for sun-kissed Persephone, but he’ll do whatever it takes to keep her safe—even if that means taking her to Spain as an unwilling hostage. Protecting her from danger will be a challenge; protecting her from desire will be pure agony. Praise for K. C. Bateman’s books: “[To Steal a Heart] is rich with espionage and suspense. The Tsimshian people of coastal British Columbia use a system of hereditary name-titles in which names are treated as objects of inheritable wealth. Human agency and social status reside in names rather than in the individuals who hold these names, and the politics of succession associated with names and name-taking rituals have been, and continue to be, at the center of Tsimshian life. Becoming Tsimshian examines the way in which names link members of a lineage to a past and to the places where that past unfolded. At traditional potlatch feasts, for example, collective social and symbolic behavior gives the person to the name. Oral histories recounted at a potlatch describe the origins of the name, of the house lineage, and of the lineage's rights to territories, resources, and heraldic privileges. This ownership is renewed and recognized by successive generations, and the historical relationship to the land is remembered and recounted in the lineage's chronicles, or adawx. In investigating the different dimensions of the Tsimshian naming system, Christopher F. Roth draws extensively on recent literature, archival reference, and elders in Tsimshian communities. Becoming Tsimshian, which covers important themes in linguistic and cultural anthropology and ethnic studies, will be of great value to scholars in Native American studies and Northwest Coast anthropology, as well as in linguistics.

In 1992, critically acclaimed poet James Ragan was in Los Angeles when riots exploded across racial and class lines. That same year he was also living in Prague when Czechoslovakia divided into two separate nations, motivated by the principles of "nationalism." This odd coincidence forms the crux of his new, eagerly anticipated book of poetry. The poems in The Hunger Wall, named for a wall near the Prague Castle, take these two cultural sensibilities that seem worlds apart and explore the subtle nuances of their unlikely similarities. In beautifully crafted and metaphorically rich language, Ragan studies what it means to set a "border," whether it be political, racial, or economic. The Hunger Wall examines a continually changing world -- a world of shifting cultural identities in which the widening gap between the rich and the poor is dangerously explosive.
