From the Pretended Answer by T. C Christians, which is the owning Christianity as the only true religion and way to eternal happiness. And therefore these lesser societies cannot in justice make the necessary conditions of communion narrower than those which belong to the catho lic church; i. E. Those things which declare men Christians ought to capacitate them for communion with Christians. But here we are to consider, that as to be a Christian sup poseth men's owning the Christian religion to be true, so the conveyance of that religion being to us now in those books we call the scriptures, there must be an acknowledgment of them as the indispensable rule of faith and manners, which is, that these books are the great charter of the Christian society, according to which it must be governed.
