The Committee reviewed the intersessional activities of its four Sub-committees and those of the regional projects supporting the Commission, as well as the outcome of the Coordinating Meeting of the Sub-committees (CMSC). The SAC reviewed and reformulated managment advice; it furthermore appreciated the gradual imlementation of the 40 mm square mesh codend of bottom trawls. It was also noted that progress was achieved on the measurement, calibration and allocation of fishing effort and adopted the statistical scheme (Task 1 matrix) for the data collection on Operational Units (OUs). The SAC has also encouraged the use of socio-economic indicators in fisheries management, including in recreational fisheries. It was proposed to relaunch the acitivities of the GFCM/ICCAT International Joint Working Group on Large Pelagic Species and the workplan for 2007 was agreed.

Issued discussed during the Committee's 6th session include: the work of its subcommittees during the inter-sessional period, research activities undertaken, advice on fishery management and research, and the workplan for 2003-2004. The Committee called on the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean to encourage the adoption of measures regarding the fishing of selected small pelagic and demersal recruitment stocks at levels compatible with sustainable exploitation. It also requested that the Commission reinforce the implementation of the measures to help reverse declining biomass of a number of important stocks.

The Committee appraised the activities of its subsidiary bodies and those of the regional projects supporting the Commission. It acknowledged the strengthening of the stock assessment process through joint assessment by experts. It favoured the use of the data from trawl survey and requested to pay special attention to the hake (Merluccius merluccius) in 2008. SAC reviewed fishery management proposals from its Sub-Committees. It took note of progress achieved for defining fisheries restricted areas and the activities on the ecosystem approach for fisheries and marine protected areas. The SAC established ad hoc Working Groups on recreational fisheries and on trawl selectivity. It provided guidance regarding the activities of the GFCM/International Commission and agreed upon its work plan for 2008. - Le Comite a examine les activites de ses organes subsidiaires et celles des projets regionaux qui soutiennent la Commission. This document is the final report of the eighth session of the Scientific Sub-Committee of the Fishery Committee for the Eastern Central Atlantic (CECAF), which was held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire from 23 to 26 October 2018. The SSC was immediately preceeded by a one-day meeting, on 22 October, on the EAF-Nansen Programme and upcoming survey related activities in the CECAF region. Major topics discussed were: (i) the reports of the assessment Working Groups on small pelagics and demersal species, as presented by the subgroups, and the report of the artisanal fisheries Working Group; (ii) fishery management advice in the CECAF region; (iii) reporting on the state of resources for the CECAF area and considerations for a revised advice framework; (iv) overview and coordination of ongoing research activities; (v) CECAF-FIRMS fisheries inventories; (vi) overview of CECAF statistics; (vii) deep-sea fisheries and vulnerable marine ecosystems; (viii) report of work of other projects/programmes in the CECAF region, report of work of research institutions or scientific groups in CECAF member countries; and (ix) future programme of work in the region. Le présent document constitue le rapport final de la huitième session du sous-comité scientifique du Comité des pêches pour l'Atlantique Centre-Est (COPACE), qui s'est tenue à Abidjan, en Côte d'Ivoire, du 23 au 26 octobre 2018. La session a été précédée d’une réunion d’une journée, le 22 octobre, sur le programme EAF-Nansen et les activités relatives aux enquêtes à venir dans la région du COPACE.
