Excerpt from Radio Telephony for Amateurs Truly Of the making Of many books there is no end and in view Of the large number Of radio books already existant and advertised as in the process Of preparation or printing, perhaps some justification is necessary for the appearance Of another. My apologia is a simple one, and possibly one engendered by ideas and aspirations not un familiar to all other radio amateurs. Since connecting up my first receiving apparatus in 1908 I have longed for the appearance of a certain type Of radio book; a book issuing preferably from the pen Of an amateur, radiating the true amateur Spirit Of inquest and investigation, a book chock full Of practical information and suggestions for new things to do and instructions for going about it, in a word, a book which would at once ignite the spark Of my enthusiasm and furnish the material for its combustion. Such a book has never appeared, nor ever shall for the great majority Of us, for we have all our own ideas as to what the ideal radio book for amateurs Should be like. But intercourse extending over a number Of years with kindred spirits and frequent discussions with them on this subject has induced the belief that in the main our ideas converge in a common channel. This book represents my conception Of the direc tion and breadth Of this channel. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Radio Telephony Since the publication of Dr. Erskine-Murray's excellent translation of Ruhmer's "Drahtlose Telephonie," there has appeared no complete exposition in any language, so far as the author is aware, of the important and growing field of radio telephony. The date of publication of Ruhmer's book was 1907, and in the succeeding decade advances have been made which render the methods there described obsolete. Accordingly the author has accepted the considerable task of writing a full description of the radio telephonic methods of the present in the thought that he might thus contribute to progress in that valuable art. Wherever possible, sufficiently complete descriptions of the apparatus employed have been given to enable the person skilled in the art to duplicate the results and to judge their value. In this connection, the ranges of transmission and the output power of the radiophonic stations have been presented. It has been thought, too, that the arrangement of apparatus in the set was of value in that it indicated how the various designers had attacked the problem of making radiophonic apparatus readily usable. It need hardly be stated that a good working knowledge of the methods and principles of modern radio telegraphy is necessary for the full appreciation of the material here set forth, though certain questions. common to both types of communication have been here considered in detail. The author desires to express his deep indebtedness for the valuable assistance in the form of information, illustrations, and diagrams which he has received from the following gentlemen and the organizations with which they are connected: Atlantic Communication Company and Messrs. Boehme, Brockmann and Reuthe; Compagnie Generale de Radiotelegraphie, and Lieutenants Colin and Jeance of the French Navy; Lieutenant W. Ditcham of the British Army; Mr. William Dubilier; Federal Telegraph Company and Mr. Leonard F.Fuller; General Electric Company and Messrs. E.F. W. Alexanderson, Albert W. Hull, and William C.White; Mr. W. Hanscom; Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company of America and Mr. Roy A. Weagant; National Electric Signaling Company and Mr. John L.Hogan, Jr.; Radio Telephone and Telegraph Company and Dr. Lee de Forest; Mr. Bowden Washington; Mr. Eitaro Yokoyama. Through their kindness he has been enabled to present here much important information and previously unpublished material. He also desires to commend highly the painstaking efforts of the editors of The Wireless Press to make this book measure up to the high aims of that organization. Excerpt from Researches in Radio Telephony: A Thesis In the last few years the strides in radio telephony have been very rapid. About ten years ago the scientific world was first introduced to the fact that radio telephony was possible; but for the first few years following, the progress in this branch was comparatively slow due to the difficulties in the generation of high frequency currents of the undamped wave type. The only two ways it was found possible to generate currents of this nature was by the arc generator or by the high frequency generator; but in the last six or seven years a new type of generator has come into existance; namely, "The Hot Cathode Vacuum Tube." This generator practically revolutionized the entire field of radio telephony and to a lesser extent radio telegraphy; but had it not been for the war, it is rather doubtful whether our advance in this science in the last four years would have been quite as rapid as it has been. Excerpt from Radio-Telephony for Everyone; The Wireless: How to Construct and Maintain Modern Transmitting and Receiving Apparatus The author has therefore accepted the task of writing a simple explanation of the working theory of radio in general, and the radiophone transmitter and receiver in particular, so that the boy of sixteen and the man of sixty will read it with equal interest and satisfaction. The work will deal in detail with the different types of receiving sets, antenna construction, data on crystal and vacuum tube detectors, and the care of apparatus; in fact, all the data necessary to install and keep in operation a modern radio phone. Excerpt from Radio Phone Receiving: A Practical Book for Everybody While many of the technical details of the subject are complex, nevertheless a satisfactory under standing Of the Operation of a radio transmitting and receiving system can be obtained without the use of mathematical formulas and complicated physical concepts. By analogies taken from every day experience, by using relatively few technical terms, and by repetition of the more important ideas, the authors of the several chapters believe they have completed a logical and coordinated presenta tion of the subject in a style suitable alike to the layman, the novice and the amateur radio enthu siast. The reader will find distributed through the text a number of practical hints and the answers to questions which Often arise in the operation of radio receiving sets. Some of these, of course, may be omitted on a first reading and be referred to later when specific difficulties are experienced. Excerpt from Radio for the Beginner The usefulness of radio to the average person has not been realized; its present popularity is merely a start in the right direction. It is easily conceivable that the next decade will see every home with a radio telephone; not replacing the regular telephone, but supplementing it by permitting the owner to hear broad cast concerts, news, special bulletins and such information, even from other cities. It will be a particular boon to persons living in the country or in small towns. The radio telephone will do as much towards placing community life in close communication as telegraphy, both wire and radio, has done to place the nations.
