Excerpt from Radio for All IN writing the present volume the author has continually had in mind a book for the public at large, not acquainted as yet with the radio art. After having reviewed nearly all the recent books on radio that have appeared since radio took the public's fancy, the author believes that the present volume covers ground not touched upon by other writers. The keynote of the book has been simplicity in language, and simplicity in radio. This book, therefore, is not a technical volume, and wherever possible all technicalities, all mathematics, and all abstruse sub ects have been left out entirely. It will also be noted that the author has not made use of the word ether in this book; for the reason that modern scientists are no longer in sympathy with the ether theory. The vacuum tube, it will be noted, has been touched upon very lightly and only where it was absolutely necessary. The reason is that the vacuum tube is a highly tech nical sub ect, and therefore does not belong in this book. It is a science by itself. Excerpt from The 40 Year March of Radio The story I try to tell you is the romance of a fast moving era's precocious and Versatile child, famil iarly called 'radio' in America and called 'wireless' in England. Implicit in radio's every adventure is the wider story of constantly increasing momentum in the scientific and industrial accomplishments that change and enrich our daily lives. We take speed so much for granted today that we cannot realize how much the momentum of achievement in nearly every field has increased, until we look into the past. Excerpt from The Rape of Radio My Name is Radio! BY Robert West My name is Radio! My influence shall abide! I, Magic Box, am something years ago The wizards dreamed of in the Arabian Nights. Science has conceived and brought to birth, More wondrous far than legends' figments wrought By the ingenious bards of long ago. Use cannot make me stale nor custom pale The glamor of my march of offerings. The world now needs me every- day and night To fill its every want and appetite For news, for music and sweet conversation, For comedy that wreathes society in smiles. I feel like a spirit medium that can bring The listener what'er he wishes from the void. Do you want multitude of thoughts, all types? Full measure comes with the revolving dial; The masters wait to pour out symphonies That rock the world and set your soul on fire. Do you want messages of happenings About this troublous world? You surely may. Do you seek sympathy, companionship? Then I am ready to respond and give You all the fullness of my complex chords To shake you out of selfish isolation As you glide on from station unto station. For I am Radio! Forward tomorrow, I shall strike out for rich new worlds to conquer Making the present television faint A shadow of the glories that will come In fullness of the real in shape and hue. Life shall be more bounteous for my task! 'Tis mine to enlarge your reach and view and ear To the utmost bounds, making man great As could be wished when a young Alexander Did set to conquer the whole habited world; Only my means persuasively are unfurled. Excerpt from The Radio Detectives Being of a naturally inventive and mechanical mind and remembering his father's advice to try to improve matters, he spent all his spare time studying the radio magazines, haunting the stores where radio supplies and instruments were sold and arguing about and discussing various devices and sets with his boy friends. Hardly a day passed that he did not arrive at his home carrying some mysterious package or bundle. Aecom panied by his chum Frank, from the time school was over until late in the evening he kept himself secluded in his den while faint sounds of hammer ing or of animated conversation might have been heard within. Excerpt from Radio for the Beginner The usefulness of radio to the average person has not been realized; its present popularity is merely a start in the right direction. It is easily conceivable that the next decade will see every home with a radio telephone; not replacing the regular telephone, but supplementing it by permitting the owner to hear broadcast concerts, news, special bulletins and such information, even from other cities. It will be a particular boon to persons living in the country or in small towns. The radio telephone will do as much towards placing community life in close communication as telegraphy, both wire and radio, has done to place the nations, indeed the hemispheres of the world in close touch with each other. It is just another instance of harnessing electricity to do infinite service for mankind. The subject is a large one to treat in such a small book, but its main object is to lay a foundation on which the beginner in radio can build a more complete knowledge of the subject. I have attempted to present fundamental facts in a concise form, making them accurate and readable at the same time.
