It discusses government policies and academic theories that affect how race and ethnic relations are structured and interpreted in Canada. This second edition takes into account social changes and academic debates of the 1990s, and also gives a view towards Canada's future.
Canada’s history, since its birth as a nation one hundred and fifty years ago, is one of immigration, nation-building, and contested racial and ethnic relations. Through their exploration of the central issues that affect Canadians today - immigration, multiculturalism, assimilation, racism, and Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal relations - the authors argue that race is not a biologically real category, but rather, a socially constructed label used to describe and explain certain kinds of human difference.
