The volume describes significant recent advances mainly in strong interaction physics. The new results concern the hadron spectroscopy and the interquark potential, the large baryonic density and high temperature regimes with a discussion of astrophysical consequences and in relativistic heavy ion collisions, the present knowledge of nucleon spin physics. A promising approach to the description of strong interaction regime, AdS/QCD, is debated. Aspects of heavy quark systems are considered, and the role of present and future experiments is analyzed.

This volume contains the proceedings of the workshop “Crossing the Boundaries: Gauge Dynamics at Strong Coupling”, hosted by the William I. Fine Theoretical Physics Institute at the University of Minnesota, May 14 - 17, 2009. The workshop honored the 60th birthday of Professor Misha Shifman and his outstanding achievements in the field of gauge dynamics. The meeting attracted a fascinating group of researchers working on the cutting edge of dynamics of gauge theories, including supersymmetric and string theories. Their talks covered a wide area of recent developments in the field.

In an epoch when particle physics is awaiting a major step forward, the Large Hydron Collider (LHC) at CERN, Geneva will soon be operational. It will collide a beam of high energy protons with another similar beam circulation in the same 27 km tunnel but in the opposite direction, resulting in the production of many elementary particles some never created in the laboratory before. It is widely expected that the LHC will discover the Higgs boson, the particle which supposedly lends masses to all other fundamental particles. In addition, the question as to whether there is some new law of physics at such high energy is likely to be answered through this experiment. The present volume contains a collection of articles written by international experts, both theoreticians and experimentalists, from India and abroad, which aims to acquaint a non-specialist with some basic issues related to the LHC. At the same time, it is expected to be a useful, rudimentary companion of introductory exposition and technical expertise alike, and it is hoped to become unique in its kind. The fact that there is substantial Indian involvement in the entire LHC endeavour, at all levels including fabrication, physics analysis procedures as well as theoretical studies, is also amply brought out in the collection.

The aim of the conference was to bring together theorists and experimentalists putting QCD to work in different arenas for a common analysis. New results and challenges in the realm of strong interaction physics were discussed and collected in this proceedings volume, with contributions of experienced and young researchers. The main results concern low energy and nonperturbative QCD, strong interactions in the regime of large temperature and density with consequences in astrophysical systems and ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions, physics at the proton-proton LHC collider, physics of heavy quarks. AdS/CFT inspired approaches to QCD were also discussed.

This 2nd edition is an extensive update of "B Decays?. The revisions are necessary because of the extensive amount of new data and new theoretical ideas. This book reviews what is known about b-quark decays and also looks at what can be learned in the future. The importance of this research area is increasing, as evidenced by the approval of the luminosity upgrade for CESR and the asymmetric B factories at SLAC and KEK, and the possibility of experiments at hadron colliders. The key experimental observations made thus far, measurement of the lifetimes of the different B species, B0-B0 mixing, the discovery of ?Penguin? mediated decays, and the extraction of the CKM matrix elements Vub and Vcb from semileptonic decays, as well as more mundane results, are described in great detail by the experimentalists who have been closely involved with making the measurements. Theoretical progress in understanding b-quark decays using HQET and lattice gauge techniques are described by theorists who have developed and used these techniques.Synthesizing the experimental and theoretical information, several articles discuss the implications for the ?Standard Model? and how further tests can be done using measurements of CP violation in the B system.

This comprehensive volume summarizes and structures the multitude of results obtained at the LHC in its first running period and draws the grand picture of today’s physics at a hadron collider. Topics covered are Standard Model measurements, Higgs and top-quark physics, flavour physics, heavy-ion physics, and searches for supersymmetry and other extensions of the Standard Model. Emphasis is placed on overview and presentation of the lessons learned. Chapters on detectors and the LHC machine and a thorough outlook into the future complement the book. The individual chapters are written by teams of expert authors working at the forefront of LHC research.

The third edition of this outstanding volume has been extensively revised and enlarged to cover all new aspects in Quantum chromodynamics. It first reviews relativistic quantum field theory and details scattering theory in the framework of scalar quantum electrodynamics. The book then introduces the gauge theory of quarks and gluons. In addition, more advanced chapters present a through discussion of perturbative and nonperturbative techniques in state-of-the-art QCD. Throughout, worked-out examples provide hands-on experience for students in theoretical physics. Research scientists will also find the book an ideal reference.
