Excerpt from Public Documents of the State of Connecticut, 1897, Vol. 1 If the State, by the action of this General Assembly, de cides to continue the making of good roads under the present law, I recommend that the law be so amended that the poorer and sparsely-settled towns, which are struggling under asheavy taxation as they can bear, and cannot take advantage of the law to obtain any improved roads, Shall be exempted from at least their share of a county road tax imposed mainly for the benefit of richer towns. Excerpt from Public Documents of the State of Connecticut, 1898, Vol. 3 The New England Railroad Company brought its petition April 27, 1897 asking for the closing of a crossing of the Melrose branch of its railroad in the town of Vernon, by what is known as the Burke Hill road, and the substitution of another crossing not at grade about 600 feet westerly of the present crossing, and the construction of a new highway to connect the Burke Hill road with said under crossing. After proper notice and hearing the petition was granted, the railroad company to pay the ex pense of the change.
