Excerpt from Proposal for Subsurface Investigation, Geotechnical Engineering Services, and Environmental Site Assessment: Chinatown Parcel B, Boston, Ma, December 13, 1990 In preparation of this proposal we have visited the site and researched the subsurface conditions prevalent in the immediate area to define the scope of services in terms of boring depth requirements and site accessibility. Based upon our research, we anticipate fill potentially underlain by organic deposits to depths of 10 to 20 feet. Stiff clays gradually becoming softer with depth will likely underlie the organic deposits and fill for depths of up to 100 feet or more prior to encountering dense granular deposits and/or bedrock. Due to these conditions, undisturbed Shelby tube sampling techniques in the clayey soils, to facilitate laboratory strength and consolidation testing, and rock core will be required to define the subsurface conditions. This book serves as a primary textbook for environmental site investigation and remediation of subsurface soil and groundwater. It introduces concepts and principles of field investigative techniques to adequately determine the extent of contamination in the subsurface for the selection of cleanup alternatives. It then focuses on practical calculations and skills needed to design and operate remediation systems that will both educate students and be useful for entry-level professionals in the field. Features: • Examines the practical aspects of investigating and cleaning up contaminated soil and groundwater • Contains scenarios, illustrations, equations, and example problems with discussions that illustrate various practical situations and interpret the results • Includes end-of-chapter problems to reinforce student learning • Provides a regulatory and risk analysis context, as well as public and community involvement aspects • Discusses sustainability and performance assessment of the remediation methods presented Site Assessment and Remediation for Environmental Engineers provides upper-level undergraduate and graduate students with practical, project-oriented knowledge of how to investigate and clean up a site contaminated with chemicals and hazardous waste.

Subsurface investigation is the most important phase of any civil engineering construction or development activities. The geologic conditions can be extremely complex, variable, and subject to change with time; soil test borings and in-situ tests are employed to obtain subsoil information. Resistivity Imaging (RI) is a non-destructive, fast and cost-effective method of site investigation and soil characterization. Site Investigation using Resistivity Imaging aims to summarize pertinent details of RI in site investigation for geotechnical and geo-environmental applications. It aims to bridge the gap that currently exists between the geotechnical/geo-environmental and geophysical engineering community. The geotechnical and geo-environmental engineers will be able to use annd understand geophysical data and utilize the information for their design. Features: First comprehensive handbook aimed at engineers that summarises pertinent details of Resitivity Imaging (RI) in site investigation for geotechnical and geo-environmental applications. for geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineers, making it possible to interpret geophysical data and utilize the information for their design. explanining the advantages of RI over conventional site investigations: continuous image, large coverage, low cost, quick and easy data processing. It will be a comprehensive handbook for the application of RI in geotechnical and geo-environmental site investigations.
