Excerpt from Proceedings of the North Carolina Pharmaceutical Association, at Its Second Annual Meeting, Held at Newbern, Aug. 9th-10th, 1881: Also Constitution and by-Laws, Pharmacy Act, &C Its introduction in the Senate by Mr. Dortch was however only the first shot on the skirmish line; it was then referred to a commit tee, and it was here, in the committee room, that the real battle was fought; and I may say that but for the unaided efforts of Mr. Simpson, who worked night and day with the committee, the bat tle would have been lost, and the Pharmacy Act of 1881 would have slept the sleep that knows no waking, in the pigeon hole of the committee room. The committee, through his influence. Finally reported it to the Senate, which it passed with the aid of some per sonal friends of mine and Mr. Simpson, in its present mutilated condition. AS soon as I knew that it had passed the Senate I immediately wrote to personal acquaintances, members of the House, asking their personal influence in its behalf, which they cheerfully gave; it is to these gentlemen, principal among whom were Mr. Granger, of Goldsboro, Mr. Sparrow, of Washington, Mr. Page, of Jones coun ty, Mr. Smedes, of Raleigh and some lady friends of mine in Ral eigh, that we owe its final passage through the House. Thus it was that our Association became a body corporate and the Phar macy Act became the law of the State on March 12th, 1881, the day before the legislature adjourned, but did not go into effect until June lst.
