DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis handbook contains 13 chapters covering banana (Musa and Ensete) diseases caused by various groups of causal agents and disorders caused by unknown and known factors. Topics discussed include fungal diseases of the foliage, root, corm, pseudostem, fruit (pre- and postharvest), as well as diseases caused by bacteria and phytoplasmas, viruses and nematode pathogens. Information is given on their economic impact, distribution, symptoms, disease cycle and epidemiology, host reaction, and control. Non-infectious disorders, mineral deficiencies, injuries caused by adverse climate and extreme weather, chemical injuries and genetic abnormalities are also described. Topic on quarantine and the safe movement of Musa germplasm is also given. This book, like the last, is for all 'banana doctors' around the world. It is hoped that it serves as a useful field and laboratory guide plus a source of information to all those investigating problems of the banana, abacá and enset crops.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKBananas and plantains are major fruit crops in the tropics and subtropics, making a vital contribution to the economies of many countries. In the last 15 years, substantial changes have occurred in banana production, among them the increased importance of fungal and viral diseases and their serious impact on Cavendish export cultivars, smallholder plantains and cooking bananas. Changes in production systems such as protected greenhouse cultivation, organic, fair-trade and integrated cultivation and their respective certification schemes have also become prominent. This book provides an accessi.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe countries of Latin America and the Caribbean are immersed in the difficult task of recovering our agrifood systems hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. In this complex situation, tropical race 4 of the Musaceae fusarium wilt is undoubtedly the greatest challenge facing the banana and plantain agribusiness in our region. However, this context also constitutes an opportunity to encourage the development and introduction of innovations that strengthen biosecurity at different levels, the best crop and soil management practices and alternatives for the recovery of the affected countries. It is also necessary to comprehensively address the strengthening of the institutional framework related to pest management, the co-responsibility of the private sector, public-private collaboration and the involvement of society as a whole. With this document, FAO strengthens its commitment to continue supporting governments and contributing to agricultural sustainability, while increasing the resilience of the sector and livelihoods in the region.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKGlobalization, trade, and climate change, as well as reduced resilience in production systems due to decades of agricultural intensification, have played roles in the spread of pests. One of the significant threats to sustainable crop production across Eastern African countries is the increasing phenomenon of the introduction and spread of emergent pests. FAO Subregional Office for Eastern Africa (SFE), in collaboration, with the Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International (CABI) undertook a survey and assessment to review the status of early warning, preparedness, and response capacities of NPPOs and agriculture extension services in the Eastern African countries. The survey involved a desk review of emergent pests, including insects, diseases, nematodes, and weeds. This report describes the status of their distribution in Eastern Africa, biological characteristics, description of hosts and symptoms on hosts as well as their economic importance and associated phytosanitary risks. The Intervention is designed to gather baseline information for developing fit-for-purpose initiatives to safeguard productivity and reduce vulnerabilities to shocks affecting food and nutrition security caused by pests and strengthen the relevant capacities of stakeholders to cope with these threats. The overall output is to develop a roadmap for surveillance, monitoring, and early response to emerging pests in Eastern Africa. Review of the existing plant protection acts and legislation; pest-listing activities for countries to develop lists of quarantine and non-quarantine pests and undertaking national contingency planning for prioritized pests are among the major recommended interventions.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThere is an urgent need to increase agricultural productivity in sub-Saharan Africa in a sustainable and economically-viable manner. Transforming risk-averse smallholders into business-oriented producers that invest in producing surplus food for sale provides a formidable challenge, both from a technological and socio-political perspective. This book addresses the issue of agricultural intensification in the humid highland areas of Africa – regions with relatively good agricultural potential, but where the scarce land resources are increasingly under pressure from the growing population and from climate change. In addition to introductory and synthesis chapters, the book focuses on four themes: system components required for agricultural intensification; the integration of components at the system level; drivers for adoption of technologies towards intensification; and the dissemination of complex knowledge. It provides case studies of improved crop and soil management for staple crops such as cassava and bananas, as well as examples of how the livelihoods of rural people can be improved. The book provides a valuable resource for researchers, development actors, students and policy makers in agricultural systems and economics and in international development. It highlights and addresses key challenges and opportunities that exist for sustainable agricultural intensification in the humid highlands of sub-Saharan Africa.
