In the present book we present a new approach to deal with the control problems (specifically, the discrete time ones) which indicates the possibility of exposing the fundamental theorems not only from control theory, but also from adjoining areas of mathematical programming. But further it provides a convenient base for formulating new and fundamental results, in this book exemplified by the theorem of the Nonlinear Maximum Principle. We call the approach the Upper Boundary Approach. While thus the book sketches some promising perspectives and documents a number of new results, it does so, we admit, in a preliminary form. Rather than elaborating on presentation, we gave priority to the quick communication of the results. The reader will hopefully agree with us in the strategy chosen!

From the preface: "The book is written for scientists, practicing engineers and students interested in the analysis of system dynamics. Experience has shown that the volume is of special value to analysts and designers of control systems in many disciplines of engineering. The first two chapters can be of great use as a textbook for subjects from the field of dynamics and control systems in university undergraduate courses, while the third chapter is intended for more detailed graduate study. Having this in mind, every section of the book ends in many solved numerical examples. This can be of great use in the continuing education and home-study of all those who are concerned with this fast-developing field."

This volume comprises the proceedings of the "3rd International Conference on Distributed Parameter Systems" held at the Chorherrenstift Vorau (Styria), July 6-12, 1986. The aim of the meeting was to stimulate exchange of information between scientists working in the field of distributed parameter systems. The papers included in the proceedings present recent results and most of them include a survey on the background of the problem. Main topics considered in these papers are boundary control for hyperbolic systems, linear-quadratic control problems, robustness, stabilization, visco-elastic and flexible structures, hereditary systems.
