The association met Friday morning February 12 at 9:30 with President Adams in the chair. Director George N. Carman was introduced to the association to offer the welcome of the Lewis Institute. Address of welcome of Director Carman. ADDRESS OF WELCOME. Director G. N. Carman, Lewis Institute: Lewis Institute opened its doors to students September 21, 1896. We complete today our first semester's work. For so young an institution to have aspired to the honor of entertaining this association might have seemed presumptuous anywhere except in Chicago, but we have you with us and we bid you cordial welcome. We wanted you to come and see what we have done here. At the risk of overstepping the bounds of modesty, I am going to take it for granted that you are as much interested in us as we are in ourselves, and tell you something about our school. Lewis Institute is a secondary school. It is undertaking to do the work of a high school and a manual training school, as well as the work of the first two years of a college and a school of technology. Why undertake so much? you may ask. Our answer is, because we believe that in no other way can we so well serve the interests of those that come to us for instruction and the community in which we are located; in no other way can we develop our resources, I mean the varied capacities of our students; in no other way can we discover each form of talent and start its development along productive lines, that is along lines that will produc...

Excerpt from Proceedings of the Tenth Annual Meeting of the North Central Association of College and Secondary Schools: Held at Chicago, Illinois, March 31, April 1, 1905 These facts remind us how little had been done before the birth of this association, and how much has been done since tending toward our great purpose of mutual understanding and sympathy betweenschools and colleges. It is interesting to note that at the preliminary meeting at Evanston a resolution was adopted asking that the Executive Committee submit for discussion at the first annual meeting the questions What constitutes a Secondary School? And What constitutes a College? Ten years have not entirely answered these questions, but substantial progress has been made. Excerpt from Proceedings of the Seventh Annual Meeting of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools: Held at Cleveland, Ohio, March 28 and 29, 1902 I esteem it an honor as well as a pleasure to be allowed to say to you just a word of greeting. For seven years I have been allowed the privilege of paying my annual dues to this Association, and at every meeting have been present in spirit, but this is my first bodily appearance. It will therefore seem to you almost as if an outsider were giving you the word of welcome. Indeed, Cleveland is proud to have you meet here. You are an Association which rarely meets away from its home, and when it does, it selects the best place. For that reason we are glad to have you here.
