This volume presents an exposition of topics in industrial statistics. It serves as a reference for researchers in industrial statistics/industrial engineering and a source of information for practicing statisticians/industrial engineers. A variety of topics in the areas of industrial process monitoring, industrial experimentation, industrial modelling and data analysis are covered and are authored by leading researchers or practitioners in the particular specialized topic. Targeting the audiences of researchers in academia as well as practitioners and consultants in industry, the book provides comprehensive accounts of the relevant topics. In addition, whenever applicable ample data analytic illustrations are provided with the help of real world data.

In honor of Samuel Kotz, an international collection of articles on the latest advances in statistics. This tribute to Samuel Kotz features articles by eminent statisticians from around the world, all recognizing the lifetime of accomplishments of one of the premier statisticians of our time. Centered on distributions, models, and their applications, this book highlights some recent developments in both theory and applications of statistics. Editors Norman L. Johnson and N. Balakrishnan, both of whom have collaborated extensively with Samuel Kotz, have gathered contributions from theoreticians and practitioners in 18 countries, giving the volume a global perspective. Each article is classified into one of 10 areas in the theory and practice of statistics. The areas highlighted in this volume are: Statistics in the world. Models. Biostatistics. Testing and estimation. Univariate distributions. Multivariate distributions. Characterizations. Probability. Bayes theory. Descriptive statistics. Many of the articles in the volume highlight Samuel Kotz's pioneering and fundamental contributions to these areas. Commemorative articles by those who knew and worked with Samuel Kotz, as well as the detailed exploration of classical and new directions in statistical research, make this volume an essential addition to any statistics library.

The book contains the Proceedings of the 2010 Conference of the Italian Systems Society. Papers deal with the interdisciplinary study of processes of changing related to a wide variety of specific disciplinary aspects. Classical attempts to deal with them, based on generalising approaches used to study the movement of bodies and environmental influence, have included ineffective reductionistic simplifications. Indeed changing also relates, for instance, to processes of acquisition and varying properties such as for software; growing and aging biological systems; learning/cognitive systems; and socio-economic systems growing and developing through innovations. Some approaches to modelling such processes are based on considering changes in structure, e.g., phase-transitions. Other approaches are based on considering (1) periodic changes in structure as for processes of self-organisation; (2) non-periodic but coherent changes in structure, as for processes of emergence; (3) the quantum level of description. Papers in the book study the problem considering its transdisciplinary nature, i.e., systemic properties studied per se and not within specific disciplinary contexts. The aim of these studies is to outline a transdisciplinary theory of change in systemic properties. Such a theory should have simultaneous, corresponding and eventually hierarchical disciplinary aspects as expected for a general theory of emergence. Within this transdisciplinary context, specific disciplinary research activities and results are assumed to be mutually represented as within a philosophical and conceptual framework based on the theoretical centrality of the observer and conceptual non-separability of context and observer, related to logically open systems and Quantum Entanglement. Contributions deal with such issues in interdisciplinary ways considering theoretical aspects and applications from Physics, Cognitive Science, Biology, Artificial Intelligence, Economics, Architecture, Philosophy, Music and Social Systems.

Multiple Decision Procedures: Theory and Methodology of Selecting and Ranking Populations provides an encyclopedic coverage of the literature in the area of ranking and selection procedures, summarizing and surveying in a unified manner a majority of more than 600 main references in the bibliography. It also deals with related problems, such as the estimation of unknown ordered parameters. A separate chapter is devoted to information about several tables available in the literature for carrying out various specific procedures. Examples are given in another chapter illustrating applications of these procedures in various practical contexts. Although several books have appeared to date in this area, many of them deal with specific aspects of the field and a limited number of topics. This book contains substantial material not discussed in other books. Audience: this book can serve as a text for a graduate topics course in ranking and selection (as it has done at Purdue University for more than 30 years). It can also serve as a reference for researchers and practitioners in fields such as agriculture, industry, engineering, and behavioral sciences.
