Teacher's Manual for First-Year Mathematics is a book written by George William Myers, a Professor of the Teaching of Mathematics and Astronomy at the University of Chicago. The book is intended as a teaching manual for teachers instructing their students using a textbook called First Year Mathematics. Myers' book is intended as a companion piece to the textbook First Year Mathematics, released by the same publishing company, The University of Chicago Press. The book makes effort to assist the teacher by providing them with a detailed how-to regarding teaching the specific problems presented in the textbook. Teacher's Manual is presented in chapters, each corresponding to a chapter in First Year Mathematics. Specific references are made to page numbers and problems presented in the textbook. In total, the book contains fourteen different chapters. Teacher's Manual for First-Tear Mathematics can only be used in conjunction with the appropriate textbook. Without access to First Year Mathematics, the book is of no use. It is however an excellent companion piece to the textbook, and those able to access the original textbook will surely find this text to be highly beneficial. While a well-written teacher's manual, George William Myers' book assumes the reader has access to the original textbook. Excerpt from Teachers Manual for the First Reader In the following pages is repeated somewhat largely the Introduction to the First Reader, but thoughts there given are here enlarged upon, and others are introduced. A child learns words in trying to tell or understand some thought. Keep him interested in the thought, and the battle is soon won. The prattling babe is not told that this is the name of a cat or a dog. The father asks him, "Does Frank wish a cat?" "Does Frank wish a dog?" And the child tries to understand the thought, and afterward he tries to express it by imitating what he has heard. The words come to his lips without any effort; it is nature's way. In teaching words to a child, the words should not be separated from the thought, and the child should be kept free as possible from self-consciousness. Excerpt from Primary Work: A Manual for Young Teachers This little book has been written for young Primary teachers, those just entering upon the work of teaching. For them only is it intended. The aim has not been so much to present anything new, as to make the experiences of the older teachers available for the younger ones. If in any small way this purpose is attained, if one teacher is helped even a little, the writer will have had her reward. Apology must be made for the overlapping of the chapters. The one subject, "language work," would include all, for "every lesson may be a language lesson." The divisions, however, were made for convenience. The methods given are not "cut and dried," but are intended to be only suggestive. And, after all, methods count for very little compared with the presence of the living teacher in the schoolroom. It may be necessary to teach many things and in many ways, but what we are will teach over our heads, and nothing acquired will stand our pupils in such stead upon the battlefield of life as the memory of a pure, sincere life once lived in their midst.
