Excerpt from Practical Instruction in Minor Tactics and Strategy, for the Use of the Regular Army and the Militia In the Franco-German War the world was astonished at the thorough knowledge which the German officers possessed of the geography and topography of the field of operations, their familiarity with the principles of minor tactics, and the consequent rapidity of movement of their forces. To-day no European nation neglects the important studies by which this knowledge was acquired, viz., military geography and the solution of practical problems in minor tactics. The officers of the European armies begin their studies in these subjects at the military academies, complete their instruction therein at the schools of application, and at every post and garrison practice the application of the principles of minor tactics thus acquired, and perfect themselves in the knowledge of the geography of their own and surrounding countries by making rapid reconnaissances in summer and studying actual campaigns in winter, and applying to both practical tactical problems. The problems herein contained were simply compiled or adapted from those given to officers at posts, at the schools of application, and at the examinations at the war academies of Europe. The examples may be multiplied indefinitely, and applied to our own country and the campaigns of our own wars, and may thus add an interest to ordinary garrison duty, and serve to impart a knowledge of the country not otherwise attainable. There is little preparation required for the pursuit of this subject and the continued practice of this system of instruction. The works of reference required are few, and maps may be obtained from the Engineer Department, or foot and mounted reconnaissances may be made at the posts, which will furnish topographical maps sufficient for all ordinary purposes. Excerpt from Studies in Minor Tactics, 1915 There having been an insistent demand for Studies in Minor Tactics, and the edition of 1908 being out of print, it was decided that the Department of Military Art should prepare a new book on the subject along somewhat different lines. With this purpose in view. Captain E. D. Scott, Field Artillery, Captain Le Roy Eltinge, Cavalry, and Captain H. B. Fiske, Infantry, were designated to prepare these studies, each in his own arm. This they have ably done, and the results of their labor appear in the following pages. It has been the aim to teach the principles of minor tactics by applying them in a practical way to the handling of small units, varying in size from a patrol to a regiment. This has been done by a series of troop leading problems in which the various phases of field operations are set forth and commented upon, orders being given for all the units involved down to the smallest patrol. It is believed this book will prove of great value to those officers seeking information as to the practical handling of small units in field operations, and of marked assistance to those preparing themselves for admission to The Army Service Schools. The authors desire to make grateful acknowledgment to Lieutenant Aristides Moreno, Infantry, for his valuable assistance in correcting and proof-reading the manuscript. Those portions of the studies referring to the sanitary dispositions are the work of Major Wm. N. Bispham, Medical Corps, to whom grateful acknowledgment is made. Excerpt from Studies in Minor Tactics In most of the studies an endeavor has been made not only to set forth certain principles of minor tactics, but also to enable the reader to form for himself a mental picture of the manner in which troops might well be handled in case the conditions assumed in the various studies actually existed in the field. It is perhaps needless to say that the department does not consider any one of the solutions herein as the only correct solution to the problem presented in the particular situation, but merely as a solution that is regarded as reasonable. The same is true of all solutions prepared by the department for the various problems included in the course in military art at these schools. Excerpt from Points in Minor Tactics The object of this book is to place between two covers, as a sequel to the drill regulations and guard manual, some elementary information on minor tac tics, gathered from a number of authorized text books for the use of the members of the National Guard. The book is addressed to infantrymen, and where passing reference is made to cavalry and artillery the reader can gain further information by turning to the authorities quoted. The number of foreign references is to be ex plained by the fact that this country has had no seri ous experience of warfare for thirty years, during which time there have been great changes in arma ment and methods. Consequently, Americans, in considering military subjects, have been forced to find much of their recent information abroad.
