Pornography in a Free Society deals with what has been called the 'civil war over smut'. It addresses an issue about which citizens of Western nations are sharply divided. Gordon Hawkins and Franklin Zimring attempt to look at the problem of pornography in a wider perspective than that of partisan political debate. To that end, they compare two American reports on pornography commissioned by Presidents Johnson and Reagan, the first published in 1970 and the latter in 1986, with the report of the British Committee on Obscenity and Film Censorship, which appeared during the years between the American reports. They discuss the radical feminist challenge to pornography and the question of pornography and children. Going on to consider likely future developments, the authors argue that the furore over pornography and the appointment of commissions are part of a 'ceremony of adjustment' to widespread availability of sexually explicit material and they predict less social concern about pornography as time passes.

Modern Free Society and Its Nemesis examines contemporary free society in relation to conservatism as its possible negation. Analyzing the impact of conservatism on such attributes of a free society as civil liberties, political democracy and economic freedom, it redefines a free society and its constitutive principles of liberty, equality and justice. It also reconsiders conservatism, including its social foundations, characteristics and types, as well as its relations to liberalism. Milan Zafirovski concentrates specifically on the effects of conservatism on the civil sphere, political democracy, and the economy, as integral elements of a free society.

"Excellent balance of case excerpts and author explanation, highly appropriate for undergraduate students." —Dr. Wendy Brame, Briar Cliff University Political factors influence judicial decisions. Arguments and input from lawyers and interest groups, the ebb and flow of public opinion, and especially the ideological and behavioral inclinations of the justices all combine to shape the development of constitutional doctrine. Drawing from political science as much as from legal studies, Constitutional Law for a Changing America: A Short Course helps students realize that Supreme Court cases are more than just legal names and citations. With meticulous revising, the authors streamline material while accounting for recent landmark cases and new scholarship. Ideal for a one semester course, the Ninth Edition of A Short Course offers all the hallmarks of the Rights and Powers volumes (also included in the Constitutional Law for a Changing America series) in a more condensed format. Ethics, Literature, and Theory: An Introductory Reader brings together the work of contemporary scholars, teachers, and writers into lively discussion on the moral role of literature and the relationship between aesthetics, art, and ethics. Do the rich descriptions and narrative shapings of literature provide a valuable resource for readers, writers, philosophers, and everyday people to imagine and confront the ultimate questions of life? Do the human activities of storytelling and complex moral decision-making have a deep connection? What are the moral responsibilities of the artist, critic, and reader? What can religious perspectives—from Catholic to Protestant to Mormon—contribute to literary criticism? What do we mean when we talk about ethical criticism and how does this differ from the common notion of censorship? Thirty well known contributors reflect on these questions including: literary theorists Marshall Gregory, James Phelan, and Wayne Booth; philosophers Martha Nussbaum, Richard Hart, and Nina Rosenstand; and authors John Updike, Charles Johnson, Flannery O'Connor, and Bernard Malamud. Divided into four sections, with introductory matter and questions for discussion, this accessible anthology represents the most crucial work today exploring the interdisciplinary connections among literature, religion and philosophy.

Adams answers this question in this provocative book—her most controversial since The Sexual Politics of Meat—by finding insidious, hidden meanings in the culture around us. With 200 illustrations, this courageous book establishes why Adams's slide show, upon which The Pornography of Meat is based is so popular on campuses and is reviled by the groups she takes on with insight and passion.
