DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Plymouth and Devonport: In Times of War and Peace HE present work represents the first attempt that has been made to blend the histories of Plymouth and Devonport. Originally the intention of the author was to supply the romance of their development during the century which is now rapidly closing in. When, however, he thought that his task was approaching completion, he discovered that it was in reality beginning. There had been a desire - strongly expressed for some years - that the past of the Three Towns should be realistically recalled, and the author had to some extent anticipated this wish by devoting himself to the collection of more picturesque material than had presumably hitherto been gathered. A vein of a new order was thus struck, and, with the perception of its interest, it became a fascination to pursue it until it was apparently exhausted.
