DOWNLOAD EBOOKDescribes a study of a 40-year-old trembling aspen stand to examine how microclimate influences the regeneration of white spruce and trembling aspen. In the study, openings of various sizes were created in the stand and measurements were made of microclimatological parameters and tree growth parameters. Results presented include solar radiation, soil and air temperature, humidity, and soil moisture in the various types of openings; seedling-water relationships; first- and second-year establishment ratios; effectiveness of vegetation control treatments; daytime patterns in stomatal conductance and transpiration; height and diameter growth; leaf area index; and differences in height between trees with pruned and unpruned roots.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKOne hundred thirty forests stands ranging in age from 1 month postfire to 200 years were sampled and described by successional series (white spruce and black spruce) and by developmental stage (newly burned, moss-herb, tall shrub-sapling, dense tree, hardwood, and spruce). Patterns of change in the two successional series are described. In addition, 12 mature forest communities are described in quantitative and qualitative terms.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKIn 2008, a Working Group that included British Columbia government staff (researchers, stewardship foresters, and wildlife habitat experts), a research consultant, and industry foresters was formed in the Cariboo Region of south-central British Columbia to determine how existing research concerning conifer#x13;broadleaf competitive relationships could be used to suggest change to free-growing guidelines for that region. The objective was to adjust free-growing criteria concerning broadleaf tree presence in coniferous plantations while maintaining consistency with biological thresholds for conifer growth that had been determined by local research. ...

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis volume presents papers given at a workshop held to review current knowledge of the silviculture of temperate and boreal broadleaf-conifer mixtures and the consequences of growing mixed stands. Topics of the papers include the importance of mixedwood stands, managing birch-dominated mixed stands, competition dynamics, silvicultural systems, stand dynamics, vegetation management, red alder-conifer stands, mixedwood management research, white spruce and aspen stands, vertical stratification in mixed-species stands, habitat management for game and parasite control, simulation of long-term impacts of alder/fir mixtures, understory protection, fertilisation, control of spruce weevils, and litter decomposition.
