This book first appeared in English in 1983, as a translation of the 20th Edition of the long-established German textbook Physi%gie des Menschen. In this new English edition the text has been fundamentally "rejuvenated", to bring it up to date with the rapid advances in many areas of physiology and to incorporate many helpful suggestions from both readers and colleagues. In its scope and didac tic goals, the book remains as we set forth in the Preface to the First Edition, which follows. First, the content was substantially reorganized. The general aspects of cell physiol ogy and intercellular communication, which underlie the functions of all organs, were extracted from the various chapters and brought together in a separate intro ductory section. We are most grateful to our colleague J. DUDEL for undertaking this task. The second step was to make the text more concise in several places (for instance, the motor and somatovisceral systems previously occupied two chapters and have now been condensed into one). By these processes of condensation and distillation of the passages on general cell physiology, space was made for the necessary addi tions and expansions, with only a slight change in the overall length of the book.

This monograph is the first of a series which is designed to present in depth timely reviews of subjects related to the blood. Insofar as each subject lends itself, the clinical aspects of each topic will be presented as fully as is appropriate, in addition to the basic features. As a consequence, the various monographs should be found useful not solely by hematologists. Depending on the nature of each topic, it is expected that these monographs will be found important by physiologists and specialists in fields other than hematology, as well as by scientists of very diverse interests. The present treatise illus trates this point. Doctors Garby and Meldon have brought together in a most useful way the spectacular advances which have been made in the last decade or two in a field of fundamental biologic impor tance. They have also brought to the discussion of this subject their own observations and interpretations as well as their profound understanding of the respiratory functions of the blood. Maxwell M. Wintrobe Salt Lake City, Utah v Preface This volume is an attempt to summarize the present state of know ledge of the respiratory functions of blood in health and disease. Though it deals fairly thoroughly with physicochemical aspects of the blood's gas transport properties and with the molecular chemis try of hemoglobin, its main emphasis is the gas transport function of the blood in vivo and modes of its disturbance in disease.

Here is the first single-volume work to analyze in a comprehensive manner the mechanisms by which the human cardiovascular system adjusts to physical stresses such as exercise, heat, upright posture, and hypoxia. Emphasizing the regulation of regional blood flow and blood volume, the work delineates the unique character of the human cardiovascular system and the regulatory problems it faces. It represents a timely response to the growing interest in cardiovascular health, exercise, and physical conditioning. In describing the basic mechanisms of vasomotor control, the author focuses on the interaction between the arterial and venous systems. He indicates how control of regional circulations interacts with control of venous volume and cardiac performance, showing how vasomotor and venomotor regulation serves the entire organism. This treatment redresses an imbalance in contemporary teaching of cardiovascular physiology which has focused more on the heart than on the vasculature. The book utilizes graphics imaginatively throughout to clarify concepts in a fresh and effective way. Features: * Analytical, quantitative, and problem oriented * Uniquely comprehensive; coverage extends from small blood vessel functioning to the entire system * Imaginatively illustrated, with exceptionally clear graphics that explain basic principles and controversial ideas * Original, new ideas on how peripheral circulation influences heart performance * Probes the upper limits of human cardiovascular function, their causes and how they change

Research centering on blood flow in the heart continues to hold an important position, especially since a better understanding of the subject may help reduce the incidence of coronary arterial disease and heart attacks. This book summarizes recent advances in the field; it is the product of fruitful cooperation among international scientists who met in Japan in May, 1990 to discuss the regulation of coronary blood flow.
