Global changes in rainfall and temperature patterns threaten agricultural production and increase the vulnerability of people dependent on agriculture for their livelihoods, residing mostly in the world's developing countries. Climate change interrupts food markets and agro-economy, posing population-wide risks to the food supply. Threats can be minimized by increasing the resilience capacity of farmers through improving agricultural practices as well as enhancing flexibility and resource use efficiency in agricultural production systems. In order to develop a sustainable climate-smart agriculture practice, the first step is to assess the impacts of environmental constricts followed by modeling-based approaches. At the same time, an evaluation of current practices in minimizing abiotic stress in field crops is unavoidable. An assessment of the efficacy of newly developed methodologies is also of prime interest. Improvements in yield stability alone cannot generate the desired growth in the agro-economic sector; slow but steady demand for the improved food quality is also high on the priority list. So “Quality with Desired Quantity” will be a prime focus in the coming years in the agriculture sector. Policies that can influence climate-smart agriculture in the future have also been given equal importance.

Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for his role in fighting global hunger, Borlaug, an American agricultural scientist and plant breeder who worked for the Rockefeller Foundation, left a legacy that divides opinions even today. His high-yielding dwarf wheat varieties, known as miracle seeds, effectively doubled and tripled crop yields across the globe, from Kenya to India and Argentina to Mexico due to their wide adaptation. But these modern seeds also required expensive chemical fertilizers and irrigation, both of which were only available to wealthier farmers. Baranski argues that Borlaug’s new technologies ultimately privileged wealthier farmers, despite assurances to politicians that these new crops would thrive in diverse geographies and benefit all farmers. As large-scale monocultures replaced traditional farming practices, these changes were codified into the Indian wheat research system, thus limiting attention to traditional practices and marginal environments. DOWNLOAD EBOOK"Phenomics" is an emerging area of research whose aspiration is the systematic measurement of the physical, physiological and biochemical traits (the phenome) belonging to a given individual or collection of individuals. Non-destructive or minimally invasive techniques allow repeated measurements across time to follow phenotypes as a function of developmental time. These longitudinal traits promise new insights into the ways in which crops respond to their environment including how they are managed. To maximize the benefit, these approaches should ideally be scalable so that large populations in multiple environments can be sampled repeatedly at reasonable cost. Thus, the development and validation of non-contact sensing technologies remains an area of intensive activity that ranges from Remote Sensing of crops within the landscape to high resolution at the subcellular level. Integration of this potentially highly dimensional data and linking it with variation at the genetic level is an ongoing challenge that promises to release the potential of both established and under-exploited crops.
