DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Physics of the Ether Surely, if a thing be stated to be practicable, the least to be required is that some idea should be formed of the means by which the result or mechanical end is to be attained, and this perception of the means constitutes the sole ground to support the assumption as to practicability. If, on the other hand, a thing be assumed to be practicable without any perception of the means, then the assumption falls away of itself from want of ground to support it. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Matter, Ether, and Motion: The Factors and Relations of Physical Science As the work is a treatise on Physics, there is no special reason for going beyond it; but if this presenta tion of the subject is any approach to the truth, there is an important conclusion to be drawn from it. If the ether be the homogeneous and uniform medium it is believed with reason to be, then, in the absence of what we call matter, no physical change which we call a phenomenon could possibly arise in it for every such phenomenon is a product, and in the absence of one of the essential factors, viz., matter, it could not be. If matter itself be a form of motion of the ether, the ether must have existed prior to matter; also, if the atom be a form of energy, then must energy have existed before matter existed. Hence there must have been some other agency radically different from any physical energy we know, and independent of everything we know, which was capable of producing orderly physical phenomena, by acting upon the ether; for a homogene ous medium could not originate it. Some philosophers call this antecedent power The Unknowable others call it God. If energy as we know it implies antecedent energy as we do not know it, so, likewise, mind as we know it implies antecedent mind under totally different conditions from those in which we find it embodied. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from An Attempt Towards a Chemical Conception of the Ether In his 'Dictionnaire Complet, ' P. Larousse defines the ether as 'an imponderable elastic fluid, filling space and forming the source of light, heat, electricity, etc.' This is laconic, but sufficient to raise some misgivings in the mind of a thoughtful man of science. He is obliged to admit, in the ether, the properties of a substance (fluid), while at the same time, in order to explain in some way the transmission of energy through space by its motion, the ether is assumed to be an all-pervading 'medium.' Moreover, in order to explain the phenomena of light, electricity, and even gravity, this medium is supposed to undergo various disturbances (perturbations) and changes in its structure (deformation), like those observed in solids, liquids, and gases. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Physics In what follows I shall try to review very briefly the principal ideas upon which modern physics rests and shall say something about where we think we have arrived in our search for knowledge. I need scarcely remind you that in the natural sciences as in more practical afi' airs, how we have arrived is as important as where we have arrived. I Shall therefore spend some time in presenting detached fragments of the experimental evidence and inferences upon which certain conclusions are based, hoping in this way to illustrate some of the constructive methods of reasoning employed in research. The ideas which underlie all our thinking are space, time and inertia or mass. With space and time as a back ground, the physicist must pursue inertia and everything related to it, along every conceivable path. In this pursuithe comes upon four ultimate though related conceptions Matter, Ether, Electricity and Energy. The historical development of these conceptions cannot even be sketched in such a lecture as this, but it should be remembered an important part of our present knowledge of matter, and nearly all that we know Of the ether and electricity, has been gained not immediately but by inf er ence. In so many cases we see or know directly only the first and last link Of a chain of events and must search by indirect means for the mechanism lying between.
