Excerpt from Physical Education in the Infant School The teacher should never ask or press a child to do anything, but should leave him to experiment by himself and set his own pace. It should be borne in mind that the child is the best judge of his own powers and strength and should therefore be allowed to explore in his own way and his own time. The child will learn to rely upon himself, and thereby in confidence, thus passing on step by step with increasing skill and courage. Excerpt from Physical Education in the Primary School At a time when Laban's principles of Space, Weight, Time and Flow and other ideas are making themselves felt, it might appear that we in Rhodesia are being a little conservative in publishing a syllabus which admittedly contains conventional material. This material, however, is applied in an unusual manner which we believe will suit the special needs of the schools in Rhodesia. With a large territory to cover it is impossible for the Physical Education Advisers to see teachers often enough to keep them all abreast of new trends. These teachers require detailed guidance. Moreover, we are aware that the majority of them prefer a syllabus. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Treatise on the Physical Education of Children When we hear of a ship striking against a rock and burying hundreds of unfortunate emigrants in a watery grave, or of the horrors of a field of battle strewn with thousands of the slain and wounded, then shipwreck and war appear to our affrighted imagination as the chief scourges of humanity; and yet, the loss of life they occasion is trifling when compared with that which results from the influence of a polluted atmosphere. For, those evils, however dreadful, exert their fury only at rare intervals, or on a comparatively narrow scene, while the numberless diseases engendered by a vitiated air are uninterruptedly active in shortening the existence of millions.
