After assuming power in 1980, the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) has sought to control the narrative of the struggle for liberation from colonialism, to the exclusion of other players such as the Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU). This book investigates the ways in which photographs are being used within Zimbabwe, especially on social media, to challenge the prevailing narrative and reclaim the memories of the subjugated. The book analyses the photographs produced by Zenzo Nkobi during the struggle against colonialism. Drawing on the memories of veterans from ZAPU and its military wing the Zimbabwe People’s Revolutionary Army (ZPRA), the book shows that photographs can both act as a conduit for existing narratives, and as a tool for shaping memory narratives, and evidencing ZPRA military prowess ahead of other movements. China and Africa have long shared a history of allegiance and contact points through global political forces from the time of colonialism and the Cold War. Sooner or later, we all face the questions explored in With or Without God, Life's Mysteries Continue, questions about the purpose of life, human mortality, spirituality, God, and life beyond the grave. The title conveys the author's tentativeness, perhaps humility. There are no postulates here, no truths to be revealed. These are ruminations. What makes these ruminations notable is that they are those of a man who, in his own words, has traversed centuries of human experience in 66 years and, in the process, acquired a unique perspective on life and nature. Mhlaba grew up in Zimbabwe, in what he calls a pre-modern age. He has lived in fear of spooks and ghosts, worshipping ancestral spirits, and was subject to the tyranny of witches and the machinations of unseen forces. He could have easily remained in that life as his forebears had done before him. Fortunately, his parents understood that he and his siblings would live much of their lives in a changed world, and prepared them through education. The book ends with a fascinating look into the future of humankind, taking the reader through uncharted territory and a new sense of awe about the meaning of life and what may lie beyond. Mhlaba went on to earn a Ph.D. and taught physics and mathematics at university level. He now lives in Newton, Massachusetts, with his wife, Nancy. They have four grown children. Mhlaba is currently writing a book on global governance.

A revelatory and informative presentation of the anti-apartheid posters created by Medu Art Ensemble Formed in the late 1970s, Medu Art Ensemble forcefully articulated a call to end the apartheid system’s racial segregation and violent injustice through posters that combined revolutionary imagery with bold slogans. Advocating for decolonization and majority (nonwhite) rule in South Africa and neighboring countries, Medu members were persecuted by the South African Defense Force and operated in exile across the border in Botswana. The People Shall Govern! features nearly all the surviving posters that Medu created between 1979 and 1985. These objects are exceedingly rare, as they were originally smuggled into South Africa and mounted in public places, where they were regularly confiscated or torn down on sight. In late 2017 and early 2018, South Africa and Zimbabwe both experienced rapid and unexpected political transitions. In Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, the only leader the country had ever known, was replaced in a “soft coup” by his erstwhile vice-president, Emmerson Mnangagwa. Over a twelve-day period in February 2018, South African president Jacob Zuma was prematurely forced from office by his former deputy president, Cyril Ramaphosa. The widespread popular rejoicing that accompanied their arrival compounded the shock of these sudden transitions. New Leaders, New Dawns? explores these political transitions and the way they were received. Contributors consider how the former liberation heroes Mugabe and Zuma could have fallen so low; the underlying reasons for their ouster; what happened to their liberation movements turned ruling parties; and, perhaps most importantly, what the rise to power of Ramaphosa and Mnangagwa foreshadowed. Bringing together fourteen leading international scholars of southern Africa, and adopting a political economy framework, this volume argues that the changes in leadership are welcome, but insufficient. While the time had come for Zuma and Mugabe to go, there is little in the personal histories or early policy actions of Ramaphosa and Mnangagwa that suggests they will be capable of addressing the profound social, economic, and political problems both countries face. New Leaders, New Dawns? reveals that despite what these new leaders may have promised, a “new dawn” has not yet arrived in southern Africa.
